that DOESN'T automatically make it a CLASSIC. A SHIT film is STILL a SHIT film half a century or MORE.

Quite true, but using a lot of CAPITAL LETTERS does not make it any truer.

I don't know if I agree. Manos Hands of Fate is a classic regardless if people belittle it. I think once it hits a certain age it's a classic.

There are plenty of old movies that are not "classic" because they're hopelessly dated, cheaply made, etc. and are generally forgettable. TCM sometimes shows these films in the early daytime hours, sometimes because they have value mainly as curios from another era or because they may have future classic stars in their casts.

Who ever said it did, RiP, IMDb ? Nothing is automatic about Classic and age certainly isn't the main factor in attaining CLASSICHOOD.

Yeah but "Old Films" doesn't sound like such a good name for a message board.

For discussions, I like the throw it at the wall and see it if it sticks approach to classicness !
BUT, I personally draw the line at films that are currently new in the theater and are obviously just passing fads and fancies that will fade away because they appeal solely to immediate interests and to an audience known to be fickle in their tastes who don't really care about quality as long as things are exploding. (whew) !
For me … bad old films are just that ~~ "bad old films".
But old films that bear the test of time and are viewed over and over again, generation after generation are classics by virtue of their artistic appeal to audiences. That's the standard definition of a "classic" in the world at large. ^^^^ Yes ! for sure, yes.
