"The word is out on the street, man. The bottom is about to fall out. They want us bad, but they're coming after you first. These are our homes. We give 'em up... and we've got nothing! Fight for it, Eddie. Fight for it!"Family man Eddie Marino (Robert Forster) lives in a city district that has over time fallen victim to increasingly high crime statistics and where the police in certain parts, have no longer any control. This has brought on a desperate situtation for many of the citizens, who has began to take matters into their own hands. One day Eddie gets the offer of coming along on a "mission" by some of his fellow co-workers, but he declines, as it goes against his believes of what is right and wrong. But when life's cruel reality suddenly knocks on his door, Eddie's whole world comes crashing down. And when being forced to watch the guilty go free, as a result of corrupt politicians in a rotten system that seems to favor the criminals instead of their victims, Marino decides that it is time take up on the offer, of becoming both judge, jury and executioner.Vigilante aka Street Fighters is another great and hard hitting revenge thriller of the best brand, directed by William Lustig and comes along with a solid cast of Robert Forster, Fred "The Hammer" Williamson, Woody Strode and Joe Spinell. It may not be as brutal or action filled as some of the other exploitation/thrillers of its time, but the acting is really good, and Robert Forster is at his best as the naive and ordinary familyman, being put through hell, and Fred Williamson, well the man is as bad ass as they come, and I loved seeing these guys chasing down the scum and giving them their well deserved punishment. The music is once again done to the great effect by Jay Chattaway and this film comes with one of the coolest intros and main themes ever:

Sounds good, a lot like Death Wish. I'll have to look for it. Thank You.

Lustig's Vigilante is a lot more thoughtful than your basic exploitative revenge story. A great cast to boot also. I wouldn't say I'm a massive fan of it, but I can't deny it's one of the better the sub-genre had to offer.
Have you watched Fighting Back (1982) before? It's very similar.

Thanks for the tip, Fighting Back looks pretty solid and comes with a great cast. Hopefully I can find a good quality (uncut) DVD version. I do know that over the past 10-12 years there have been a lot of revenge/vigilante thrillers being made, but no matter how nasty, brutal or tragic they are, there is one thing that (at least for me) they all (or far too often) lack, and that is the nasty, gritty atmosphere of the 70s and 80s, were cities like New York looked like a huge cesspool full of chaos and danger. Sounds good, a lot like Death Wish. I'll have to look for it. Thank You. Yeah, there were a lot of similar titles being released back then, and some of them turned out to be just as entertaining as the original Death Wish film. Which by the way is about to be remaked with Bruce (I have been replaced by a zombie version of myself, who has no emotion and just look incredible bored in every film I have done for the past 10-12 years) Willis in the lead as Paul Kersey.
