Excalibur (1981) is one of my All Time Favorites, but, I consider it to be a fantasy film.
So I have to go with Kingdom of Heaven (2005).

alexander nevsky (1938-russ) becket braveheart el cid excalibur lancelot du lac (1974-fr) the lion in winter macbeth (1971) the seventh seal the vikings (1958) the warlord
21st century film.. the 13th warrior kingdom of heaven vahalla rising macbeth (2016)
not to forget a truckload of medieval styled movies (& TV), particularly in the wake of LOTR and its' medieval trappings - not least, the Viking genre and dragon fantasy. CGI makes it a lot easier to recreate yee olden times, of course. All we had was the sword and the sorcerer..and the second rate like.

The Virgin Spring, I guess. I don't generally like that time in history depicted on screen (and I'm sure I would have enjoyed it even less in real life), but this movie was very simply done and it was emotionally effective.
