Kefir - a cultured, fermented beverage that tastes a great deal like a yogurt drink (in fact, I refer to it as "liquid yogurt") - is quite tasty. Lately I've been gravitating more towards just drinking Kefir, and cutting out yogurt. It comes in a variety of flavors, either plain, or fruit such as peach, berry, lemon, etc.
Peach Kefir is my favorite.

I think if my memory serves well it is an Iranian drink. I had it once (don't remember the flavour) at an Iranian supermarket. Now that you have reminded me of it I might try it again, Zolo.
Edit: Nopes it is not exclusively an Iranian drink. It is more of a drink originally from Caucasus region of ex Sovet Union.

I've always thought of it as "liquid yogurt," but that doesn't seem appealing, somehow. I guess I should try it.
What is it that makes you want to move away from yogurt, and toward kefir?

The Kefir has a bit more of a fermented "tang" to it... kind of hard to describe, but you know it when you taste it, I guess. I also like the thick, almost milkshake-like consistency of Kefir.

My mother. It settles her upset stomach. So, would that make YOP a type of kefir?

I bought it when I first saw it at a regular grocery store here in Canada (this is more than ten years ago) thinking that I would like it, since I like yogurt drinks and Turkish ayran, but I hated it. Never tried it again since.

I wonder what is the price you pay for Kefir, Zolo?
Here in Australia, it seems to be priced very costly. This 148 ml pack from Coles supermarket comes at $2. So that is $13.51 per 1L. That is equivalent to 10.01 US $ per 1l. What's price at your place?

I'll have to check, AJ, I know it's not cheap, but it's not as high as $10 US per liter. I think I'm paying around $5.50 a quart, which is slightly less than a liter, so maybe $6 a liter? I'll get a better look at the price per ounce next time I'm in the store and let you know. But yeah, it's not cheap, but I don't drink a lot of it. I think it's worth every penny, tbh.

ZolotoyRetriever Ok, I did more online search and found that larger packs are less cheaper here. 1 L pack comes at 7.5AUD which would translate to 5.55 USD/L. I think if I go to middle eastern store or Turkish supermarket then may find even cheaper versions. I am sure to buy it as your post has really made me think about it.

I just got back from a visit to my store and it was pretty much as I said... well, the Kefir I showed in the pic I posted was $5.39 a quart (32 ounces), so that equates to 16.84 cents an ounce in U.S. currency.
Like I said, not cheap, but it's not so high that it's unaffordable or something. It's a good beverage, and, I like to assume, very healthful for you, too.
Hopefully the Turkish store you speak of will have some good product and good price for you.

Anything from $3 per litre and up. It's dependent on packaging (paper carton vs. plastic bottle) and flavour (plain is usually cheaper). Also, the brand and organic or not. All prices Canadian.

Pretty reasonably prices I must say. I will try to visit the Turkish store as soon as possible to see how cheaply I can get it.

But I had Kefir from Woolies. Mango flavour. It was pretty good in taste and seemed to have billions of probiotic organism so good for stomach and digestion as well.

Funny you should post this, my friend is on a kefir craze lately. She grows? ferments? it (not sure of the correct term) herself. She tries to get all of her friends hooked on it too. I know it has lots of health benefits, but I tried it (she made me) and hated it.
