He often played villains in movies, but he also played sympathetic characters, too. He was, arguably, the best Abraham Lincoln in movie history. And I loved his character of Andy in 49th PARALLEL, where in the final scene, he punches the lights out of the Nazi protagonist.
Later, he was equally successful on TV as Dr. Gillespie and other roles before failing health forced him to retire.
IMHO, he was one of filmdom's best character actors.

He sure could play difficult, unyielding fathers:
SANTA FE TRAIL (as John Brown) MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA EAST OF EDEN SEVEN ANGRY MEN (as Brown again)

An interesting bit of trivia:
Massay starred in an episode of ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS, where he played a farmer who was too late to get his critically injured son to a doctor because of a "Road Hog" (the episode's title). As a result, Massey plotted with his surviving sons to bring the POS down, since the authorities refused to act. Well, the son who actually carried out the vendetta was played by the young, then unknown, Richard Chamberlain! I wonder if the two actors ever discussed this on the set of DR. KILDARE.
