What do you prefer to heat and cook with?
I've got gas furnace but electric stove. On one hand, being at the mercy of the power company is bad, but on the other, gas makes me nervous.

Electric all the way. Microwaves rock! They do, but we got by for eight years without one.

I voted gas because (a) I'm used to it, and (b) we've had a number of times when the power has been out, but our gas has never been out. So we can still cook during prolonged power outages.
Unfortunately, even with gas-based heating, we still have a problem with prolonged power outages in the winter, because the thermostat is electric.
Luckily we don't have prolonged power outages very often. The last time was in 2012 with Hurricane Sandy.

Yeah, we've done that before.

Electricity seems a lot more efficient.

I voted for gas. sure there are worries with gas and leaks and everything but you can cook with no electricity.
I grew up in an area that lost electricity at least 4 if not more times a year due to weather, shitheads who don't know how to drive, power plant hiccups, whatnot. that big issue we had with US saying it was CANADA and CANADA saying it was US-- electricity was out for about 4-5 days.
hurricaine sandy had my mother going to a colleague's close friend's house to shower. we lost power for two weeks!
yup our little area was often forgotten.
