Well, today I relented and went back to that store and got a much smaller bag of Brazil Nuts - only .17 lb. (that's about 2 3/4 ounces). Still not cheap: that alone came to $5.06. I suppose that'll have to take care of my Brazil Nuts craving for a good while.

Very close friend of mine works for a dried fruit and nut distributor. He buys the products directly from affiliated plants all over the world and them sells them to retailers here in the US, either for packaging in trail mix, or for combining into bars (Nature Valley, Hain Celestial, etc.). Every year for the holidays, he gives me a pound of fresh cashews from one of his South American plants. I guess just because they are fresh and only slightly roasted to preserve them, they are out of this world delicious. They'd be pricey per pound too I'd imagine but I've never bought them. what else does this friend 'import', eh?
