The other day I got a small bag of them from the bulk bin at a local grocery store, along with a few other items. When I rang up at the register, my eyes just about popped when I looked at the total bill. I came to discover that that "small bag" of Brazil Nuts came to $15. They were priced at 30 bucks a pound! That's more than steak. I ended up having the clerk take them off and put them back.

Zolo: I've purchased shelled Brazil nuts at Walmart in the produce section, I think I paid about $6.00 for a 6 ounce bag., When I told my Dr. about my love for Brazil nuts, he cautioned me about eating too many because they are very high in selenium and too many can cause health problems. I Googled them to find out how many to eat a day and the recommendation was only 2!!! I guess that's why when you buy a can of mixed nuts, there's only about 4 nuts in the whole can. They are so good.

Well, I feel a bit foolish because I have never heard of Brazilian nuts before I read this thread. Saffron is probably the most expensive thing that I know about but unlike Brazilian nuts it is not surprising that Saffron is very expensive.

I also recently discovered this little fact about Brazil Nuts: All that notwithstanding, I love to munch on them, and I don't see how I could limit myself to just two a day. But yeah, that price... that's what will be the limiting factor for me, not the selenium or the radium. LOL

Zolo: I think if we don't pig out on them daily, we'll be ok. I can't just eat 2 either so maybe I'll have them as a treat once in a while. I don't know why they are so expensive but everything is becoming very expensive, every week I go to the grocery store and prices have gone up 50 cents in just one week while wages and SS are staying stagnant. No such thing as eating cheap anymore, even Ramen noodles have gone up in price and I don't like them and they don't fill me up at all, I would rather stuff my face with bread. Luckily WKD is still working but that will change in about a year. As long as the wicked kitties eat well, WKD and I can starve ourselves a little.

They're not my favorite, in the "nut mix." To me they have a mouth-feel of too much oil, and a slightly plastic taste.

Very close friend of mine works for a dried fruit and nut distributor. He buys the products directly from affiliated plants all over the world and them sells them to retailers here in the US, either for packaging in trail mix, or for combining into bars (Nature Valley, Hain Celestial, etc.).
Every year for the holidays, he gives me a pound of fresh cashews from one of his South American plants. I guess just because they are fresh and only slightly roasted to preserve them, they are out of this world delicious. They'd be pricey per pound too I'd imagine but I've never bought them.

I sort of agree with you Divtal about the canned ones that you find in those nut mixes, like Planter's salted nuts. Those Brazil Nuts aren't nearly as good as the raw ones you can get - as in the bulk bins, as I was mentioning. The raw ones, to me anyway, have a wonderful taste. And it's almost like no two are quite the same: some of them taste slightly sweeter than others, some taste slightly "nuttier"... yeah, they're like that. But thanks to that exorbitant price, they'll have to become a rarer treat for me now, I guess.

Yes, I'm noticing some troubling price increases, too.
One more thing of note about Brazil Nuts, which likely goes a long way in explaining their cost, is that apparently they can only be grown successfully in pristine forest areas - not really in planned orchards. They need a certain variety of bees in order to pollinate the plants, and those bees are only found in the virgin forests: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil_nut#Reproduction

I love to eat raw Brazil nuts, but being so cost-prohibitive I usually don't get them when I'm buying nuts at the market.

Socks : Check your local Walmart produce department, I checked today and they had a 5 ounce package of "Fresh Orchard" Brazil Nuts for $4.98, my Walmart has them near the potato bins, unsalted and shelled.

That was a House episode, where a spy was suffering from radiation poisoning and House "cracked" the case by discovering he was scarfing brazil nuts by the bucketload.

My mom loves Brazil nuts and I would always pick them out of mixed nuts to give them to her.

Yep, pretty steep where I live. I currently have blanched peanuts in the cupboard and some whole almonds.

Socks: You need to treat yourself once in a while, there were about 25 nuts in that 5 ounce bag and 25 Brazil nuts are equal to at least 50 - 75 other nuts. Indulge yourself a little, life is too short.

I wonder if something flags at the checkout if you try to buy a lot of packets of them at once?

Brazil nuts are my favorite too.
Of what's in a Mixed Nuts can they are gone first, followed by hazel nuts, then almonds, then peanuts and I almost hate cashews so they are gone last.
