Probably my favorite Rickey story was when he was on the Mets and he told John Olerud (famous for wearing his batting helmet in the field) that he played with a guy in Toronto who did the same thing. Olerud said, "I know, it was me."

*A reporter asked Rickey if he talked to himself, “Do I talk to myself? No, I just remind myself of what I’m trying to do. You know, I never answer myself so how can I be talking to myself?”

![]() *He was looking for a seat on the team bus and teammate Steve Finley said, "Sit anywhere you want, you got tenure." "Ten years? What are you talking about? Rickey got 16, 17 years."

Rickey got 16, 17 years." *A reporter asked Henderson if Ken Caminiti’s estimate that 50 percent of Major League players were taking steroids was accurate. His response was, “Well, Rickey’s not one of them, so that’s 49 percent right there." iirc he once told the manager he couldn't play that day because he "wasn't feeling it."

Really a lot of NFL players. But really idolized is a strong word. More like respected. Not just on the field but off it most of all.

MLB - Fred McGriff NHL - Steve Yzerman
I had an affinity for players who weren't jerks, thus cancelling out about 79% of eligible contenders.

I, and probably most of my generation, idolized Jackmerius Tacktheritrix growing up.
Still have most of his posters.

I remember being IN Arlington the week Nolan Ryan had his 7th no hitter and Rickey broke the stolen base record (in Oakland).
