Love watching Graig Nettles at 3B for the Yankees in the mid 70s to early 80s. If anyone watched 3rd game of 1978 WS, they know what I mean. He also won many games for the Yankees with HR. ![](http://photofile.com/Original/AA/JZ/aajz221.jpg)

He was maybe the greatest player in the NFL in the early 70's, but everyone up here knew that he didn't want to be in Buffalo. Once or twice a year, there would be comments about how he wanted to leave but couldn't. Perrault probably would have preferred Montreal but he always did a lot for the area. And he was so exciting to watch. One of the greatest stickhandlers in NHL history. Roberto Clemente was another. I have three framed pictures in my office, my wife, my daughter and the grandson and the Great Clemente. He's always a reminder that a person can do more.

One of the funniest thing I seen was in 1976, when Mark Fidrych was having his 15 minutes. The Bird was famous to talking to the baseball "You curve just right, ball. You make sure to miss that bat". Nettles came up and stated talking to his bat "never mind what he's saying, you knock that baseball into the upper deck. Nettles popped out because, he said the bat was Japanese and didn't understand him. Probably as good of a third baseman as Brooks Robinson defensively but he never got the love. Almost 400 HR too.

Loved that 67 Rams team, and Deacon was the man. My favorite team of all-time. F-ing Packers beat them in the playoffs.
Tommy Davis of the Dodgers and later many other teams was my guy.
I won't speak of Mantle.

I wasn't into sports enough to idolize anyone, but Lineker is the first I remember really being aware of.

![](https://images.psacard.com/s3/cu-psa/autographfacts/mickey-mantle-signed-photo-644.jpg?h=1000) Mickey was my idol since his rookie year of 1951. I cried when he died in 1995. I have this autographed photo framed and hanging on my den wall.

Not to the point of idolizing, but feeling some connection to whoever's pre-printed autograph was on the bat or glove I was using during Little League.

The Macedonian Marvel
Ricky Walford the flying Dragon from Walgett.
Craig "Billy" McDermott. Forgotten by most, but he was easily Australia's best bowler during my formative years from 1990-1995 (he outbowled Warne in the 95 Ashes)

I didn't know any players when they were children.

First two I idolized were Steve Carlton and Larry Bowa. Man I loved those late 70s early 80s Phillies. Should have won more.

To make a long story short, there wasn't really anyone I idolized as a kid. I grew up in Miami when the only team was the Dolphins--I was well into my 20s by the time the Heat started, and then already in my 30s when the Marlins and Panthers started. There was very little sports on TV when I was growing up--and even when sports were on TV, it wasn't the same teams regularly. So I didn't know anyone well enough to idolize them. Aside from football, I liked baseball a lot and played it from little league through high school, but I wasn't able to watch anyone regularly until the mid 1980s, when our local cable started carrying WOR (at which point I became a bit of a Mets fan, and I'm still a Mets fan to this day, although I like the Marlins at least as much). I basically never watched any basketball or hockey until the Heat and Panthers started. Getting local teams is what got me interested in those sports.
I was more into music as a kid. I'm still more into music. I'm a big sports fan now, too, but I didn't really start being a huge sports fan until I was in my 20s.
