My intuitive response is "No," but I can't guarantee that I might not do something risky to help others without thinking too much about it in an emergency situation.

For anyone who votes no, what happened to "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few?"

I would say no but I think in truth if faced with a surprise situation, one cannot know what they are going to do until it happens. I think the emotional state would decide whether one feels they have to intervene or think about oneself. Also the vulnerability of the person in distress. If they appear unable to help themselves at all, one might be more inclined to intervene or if they ask for help. Peer pressure would be a factor too.

Knowingly, no. If I push someone out of the way of a moving car and then an anvil hits me on the head, that cannot be helped I guess.

Elaborate please... The scenario as you present it is not enough to make a conclusion. For example: the scenario completely changes when the strangers are the whole planet Earth, or millions of people, or an orphanage full of kids, or the guy who is destined to save the world from the Terminators. etc.

That's pretty much my thoughts because I kind of assume the default programming of most people would be to avoid conflict. but with that said... you just never know how you might react in a life threatening situation.

Depends on the situation.

For anyone who votes no, what happened to "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few?" Does anyone (here, at least) agree with that as a blanket statement?

I don`t know. If I knew for sure somehow that they were good people, then I'd like to think so, yes.
But there are so many selfish people out there these days. So if I did sacrifice myself, how would I know I'm not just saving a bunch of selfish people who wouldn't do the same for me?

As others have said, there's not enough information.

No, but if the danger is only mild, then maybe.

I wouldn't sacrifice my dogs for the lives of strangers. I wouldn't sacrifice my dogs for most people I know. The only people who would get pereferential treatment over my dogs are my mother and granddaughter. My daughter is day to day.

Sacrifice... no.
Risk... possibly.
It would depend upon the circumstances.

For anyone who votes no, what happened to "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few?" Or the one.
However, as much as it grieves me to admit this, I am not a Vulcan.

My dogs are the kids I like though.
