I don't remember a single soul dressing like a High School Musical character in 2008. On the other hand, there was this little movie called The Dark Knight that came out that year. People might have dressed like this guy called "The Joker" in it.
I decided to look at the year 2008 in lieu of the fact that I can't recall what people wore the year I was born.

Strongly disagree. According to Cosmopolitan, Annie (1982) was the most worn Halloween costume the year I was born.
I really doubt it. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) was released in theaters four months prior to October. It doesn't make any sense that boys would be dressing as a female character unless trick-or-treaters were comprised mostly of girls at the time.
I started out as one of the characters from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987), followed by Batman/Ghostbusters II (1989), Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993), and Scream (1996) before I completely outgrew the experience.
