Saving my fave for last.
James Herbert (RIP)
The Survivor
-Meh. It wasn't too bad.
Deadly Eyes (based on The Rats)
-Complete crap. It barely resembles the book, its not scary, and the rats, when they're not inanimate puppets, are dachshunds dressed up.
Haunted
-Meh. Forgettable.
Fluke
-Easily the best movie based on a Herbert book, and the most faithful. And I didn't even like the book much.
The Secret of Crickley Hall
-BBC miniseries. Not seen.
-----------------------------------------
Clive Cussler:
Raise the Titanic
-A really boring slogfest. The book at least had some decent suspense moments. This takes that all out.
-Funny goof: scenes supposedly set in Cornwall are actually filmed in Whitby, you can even see Whitby written on a lifering in a pub.
Sahara
-This got a lot of shit, but I quite enjoy it. It's over the top, its trying to be Indy/Bond, but its a decent bit of mindless fun.
---------------------
Tom Clancy (RIP!)
The Hunt for Red October
-It gets a bit slow, and the FX look kinda crappy at times, but it's a solid Cold War thriller, and easily one of the very best submarine movies, in fact its the most successful one, grossing higher than even Crimson Tide.
Patriot Games
-It's far from perfect, it rarely strays from decent to outstanding, but it is a pretty good thriller. Highlight: an SAS raid on a terrorist camp seen via infrared satellite feed.
Clear and Present Danger
-A tad long-winded, more than a bit melodramatic, the climax feels more Ramboesque than the book's more epic one, but a solid movie nevertheless, with some good action moments, the best being the RPG ambush, and the bomb drop.
The Sum of All Fears
-The first attempt to reboot the series. If you can get past Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan, and the changing of the book villains (Palestinians, left-wing Germans, an American Indian extremist, and a liberal President and his bitch whore National Security Adviser) to a PC-friendly alternative (neo-Nazis), its an OK movie. It's not brilliant, but it moves along at a fair clip, and it does have its moments.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
-Another reboot, with Chris Pine in the role. This is not based on any book, though they update Jack's back story to contemporary times (college grad, studied economics and history, joined Marines, suffered back injury in helicopter crash, discharged, future wife helped fix him up). It's not too bad a movie, its a watchable spy flick, but its a very generic one, nothing remarkable.
Op-Center
-TV miniseries, better in its full length than the chopped down one on VHS. Its more like an origin story, set before the book series. And its actually better than some of the books.
Netforce
-A two-part miniseries very loosely based on the first book in a series. I wasn't too fond of those books, and this is unlikely to generate enthusiasm as it is boring as fuck, and hilariously dated in its futuristic vision of 2005.
Jack Ryan
-A series coming out on Amazon.
Also - there are several games with Mr Clancy's name attached
The Hunt for Red October
-There was a version based off the books, a serious sub simulation. And a more arcadey one based off the movie.
Red Storm Rising
-Submarine game based off the book. It was awesome! Just your sub against half the Soviet Navy. Depending on the year you chose, you could pick a Permit, Sturgeon, Los Angeles, improved Los Angeles, or Seawolf sub (it would randomly assign you a vessel from the class you picked). Missions would involve: sinking carriers, anti-sub vessels, invasion forces, sub packs, or attacking airbases.
The Cardinal of the Kremlin
-Spy game that pretty much vanished into obscurity.
SSN
-Sub game. You vs China.
The Sum of All Fears
-First person shooter, based off the movie, but taking some inspiration from the book.
Power Plays series
-There are at least 3 obscure games thar are kinda based off another book series.
Rainbow Six series
-A very popular series of FPS tactical shooters.
Ghost Recon series
-A more military-focused FPS series of games, also very popular.
Endwar
-Strategy game, set in a near-future, where the US, EU, and Russia are fighting it out.
Splinter Cell series
-Stealthy spy series, which are probably the most successful ones to bear the author's name.
HAWX series
-Flight sim games, set in same universe as Ghost Recon. You fly for private military contractor. So basically Ace Combat for Clancy nerds. 👍
The Division
-Post-apocalyptic FPS, I believe its an MMORPG aswell? Some plague has killed lots of people. Survivors have separated into different factions. Sequel in works.
