as great as publix is... its the duane reade of supermarkets... their sales aren't really sales. aldis is great if you have a way to get there and then lug your 'whats the name?' yogurt home. shop rite and stop and shop are the great ones near me. agree about publix. in florida when i shop for my grandparents groceries when down there i get all non-perishables at the walmart superstore---huge deals! perishables at publix. I guess prices are different in different areas of the country, I get much better deals at the Publix in Mobile than any other grocery store including Walmart. Every week Publix has their price comparison list showing whats cheaper than Walmart and they always have really good buy one get one free deals. The local Walmart superstore is poorly stocked and brand names are disappearing from their shelves. The only things I get cheaper at Walmart is Fancy Feast but the choices are limited , milk, Klondike bars, Hershey bars, canned soups and just a very few other items. I usually buy non grocery items at Walmart. There is no Aldi's here and Piggy Wiggly is a rip off because you have to pay a 10% service fee and then the 10% Al. sales tax, that's 20% on everything you buy.

The 1 Aldi around me (still two subway trains away) sucks in comparison. It's barely an Aldi. There is no Walmart or Piggly wiggly. Sure as shit no Publix.

Winco is a nightmare to shop at. It's where the poor people on assistance shop. Winco keeps their prices down by 1. no paper advertisements. 2. being non-union 3. forcing customers to bag the groceries themselves Every time I went there, It was always 1. long lines with long waits 2. short lines with long waits (And long lines with extremely long waits) thanks to people who use things like WIC, extreme couponers, putting things back because the total came to more than they expected, ETC 3. Fights between 2 or more people over the last item that WIC covered. a fist fight between 2 women broke out over the last box of winco store brand lucky charms because WIC covered it and they both wanted it. SMH One time, In the winter, when it was finally my time to be rung up, my ice cream had completely melted because of the long wait I hated shopping there but I don't drive and that was often a place i got a free ride too since the neighbor in the apartment below me shopped there

Trader Joe's is definitely #1 on my list. Great food, great prices, terrific staff, just awful parking lots.

Re: Central Market in Texas... we have a Central Market chain (okay, actually, it's only 3 stores) out here in the greater Seattle area. I'm pretty sure they're not related to the Texas ones. Anyway, the one I go to is quite nice - one of my favorite stores. I also like the Kroger-owned stores in this area: Fred Meyer, and QFC (Quality Food Center).

Hey why isn't Walmart on that list!
(just kidding, I bought some hamburger there a couple days ago and it smelled like it was turning sour, at least they let me exchange for other food yesterday)

WAY higher prices in those stores.

It's actually not too far from another place that I recall had a fantastic beer selection, called "Full Throttle Bottles." But as I mentioned, I'm currently keeping off the beer... don't need those excess carbs. lol

In the SF Bay Area, Safeway and Lucky ( was Lucky, then Albertson's, now Lucky, again), can offer a good savings on some items ... once you learn to track their " sales rhythm." They, obviously, work together on many weekly specials. Their special offers run from Wednesday, through Tuesday. On Monday we get their fliers in the mail. Food items - especially produce/meat - will be lower in one store, ONE WEEK, then they switch, for the following week. For household items, the "switch" occurs after 2-3 weeks. You have to stay on top if it. I used to use the "rhythm method," for paper products, but I've discovered that CVS is far above anyone else, for toilet paper/tissue/paper towels. Safeway and Lucky remain tops in other household stuff. I went to school in Oregon, so I remember Fred Meyer. And, we used to have a QFI (Quality Foods Incorporated), in the 60's/70's. They're gone, and I don't know if they're related to QFC.

The only market on the list near me is Aldi's. I never shop there, they just don't have what I want. Like, decent food?

Any time a grocery store carries a brand that says VALUE WATER etc, that's your cue to avoid like the plague.

Some of these are located throughout the country, but it doesn't say how they went about their "survey". Here: WF & TJ-suck. Yes, to put it bluntly, they do. Aldi's is good, but I shop for my store as well. They just don't have enough of the basics for baking. Fresh Market....I went in ours once. It just closed it's doors. It had nothing that any of the other full stores had-including "fresh" produce. Maybe they should do a "worst" supermarket. Then those here would get off they're collective...and do something besides lie(Low prices, low prices-while not having any employees on duty).

Publix is my favorite. When I lived in Albuquerque, it was Albertson's and Trader Joe's and when I lived in the Chicagoland area, it was Jewels. Oh, when I lived in Las Vegas it was Von's.

All of the Lucky supermarkets in Southern California had become Albertsons sometime in the mid 90s or early 2000s, I forgot. Never heard of QFI but i looked it up. They weren't related to Korger (QFC's owner) at first but were bought out by a Kroger subsidiary in the 70s [/quote]
