Wow, LIDL at #3.
I like LIDL. I much prefer shopping there than at the glossy places like Tesco or Sainsburys. I hate those places with their "Your Tesco" and "It's your Sainsburys" faux-friendly mottos. It's not mine and it never will be, so don't make it sound like I am part of the family and have a million shares in it. Just sell me good honest groceries at a reasonable price without all the in-your-face brash selling tricks. That's why I usually go to LIDL. I'm in and out in fifteen minutes and no longer. Nine times out of ten I can get anything that the 'big boys' sell at inflated prices - I can get it at LIDL for less money and it's 9/10 of equal or better quality. They may cut corners at LIDL regarding signage and fancy dΓ©cor but give me savings over flash shiny gimmicks any day.
I am not Scrooge, but I do not enjoy being conned and patronized by the so-called 'top' supermarkets in the UK. I don't know if you will get spruced-up versions of LIDL but I am happy with it as they are.
I've only been to ALDI once, as it's further from me than LIDL. The set-up at ALDI was pretty much the same, to my eyes. I only went in quickly for one item so didn't have time to look at the prices in general. About a year ago I bought a bottle of ALDI Kooliburra Australian Shiraz wine for a friend who had seen it advertised. It cost Β£3.99 ($5.14) - the price remains unchanged since then - and she said it was indeed very good. In fact it won a Silver Medal at the Drinks Retailing Awards last year. ALDI has won quite a few awards for its wines.
I can't speak on LIDL wines because I am not a great wine drinker but there's very little wrong with their food.

Publix is my favorite. When I lived in Albuquerque, it was Albertson's and Trader Joe's and when I lived in the Chicagoland area, it was Jewels. Oh, when I lived in Las Vegas it was Von's.

When I was in UK I visited Tesco most often because that was right next to me. I also visited Iceland (it's the cheap one), Aldi and Morrisons. There was no Sainsburys close to me so I think I rarely visited that pace.

WHOLE FOODS, and TRADER JOE'S are the only ones, listed, that are in my city/region. - I would give credit to Whole Foods, for having produce that isn't packaged/bagged, and for having a meat/fish department with fresh items and "live" butchers. - TJ's gets points for lower prices, and a fun wine selection. Several of the communities in the larger geographic area ... which we, generally, consider to be 9 counties ... have RALEY'S Markets, which I love. I think that they may have a connection to KROGER'S, but I'm not sure of that. I would love to have them much closer, but there are none in my county. I've heard of PUBLIX, but they aren't here. For a while, we had FRESH AND EASY, which was a British chain, owned by TESCO. One was only about 10 blocks from my house. I liked much about that store - especially, the British brands that they carried. They were "no frills," with all self-serve, including check-out. The store that was close to me was very profitable. Unfortunately, they weren't that successful, overall, and the chain closed in all U.S. locations.

The only market on the list near me is Aldi's. I never shop there, they just don't have what I want.

lol, I noticed that Winn Dixie is not even on the list, but yes, I love Publix for their Cuban sandwiches and bakery. Aldi is good if you want to get produce food at a cheap price.

I always have a hard time finding the celery, maybe they should put on one of the upper shelves in the produce case instead of a lower shelf. They should put the celery next to the carrots like a lot of other stores.

Winco is a nightmare to shop at. It's where the poor people on assistance shop.
Winco keeps their prices down by 1. not paper advertisements. 2. being non-union 3. forcing customers to bag the groceries themselves
Every time I went there, It was always 1. long lines with long waits
2. short lines with long waits (And long lines with extremely long waits) thanks to people who use things like WIC, extreme couponers, putting things back because the total came to more than they expected, ETC
3. Fights between 2 or more people over the last item that WIC covered. a fist fight between 2 women broke out over the last box of winco store brand lucky charms because WIC covered it and they both wanted it. SMH
One time, In the winter, when it was finally my time to be rung up, my ice cream had completely melted because of the long wait
I hated shopping there but I don't drive and that was often a place i got a free ride too since the neighbor in the apartment below me shopped there

Costco for the quality and price Trader Joe's for the bargains and decent quality HEB is good for the basics here. Much better than Randall's/Safeway. I like Whole Foods, but only get sale items, fresh produce, house-smoked chicken, and the barbecue bar (especially if I can pull the beef off the rib so as not to pay for bone).
Have soured on Aldi. Mostly crappy clones of brand name stuff cheap. But they are the only ones that have my beef taquitos.
