Would you say House MD is a tv series like Breaking Bad and 24 to name some, a procedural like CSI and Law and order or works as both and you can watch as you want it ?
When Fox ordered the show if im not mistaken they asked for a procedural and before the pilot was shot the plan was a medical CSI but maybe when they Found Hugh Laurie and the Character became so popular maybe its when they daid hey lets better do a character study series but we still have our case of the week.
David Shore its clear he treated House as a series with beginning and ending because when they didn't know if they would be able to make a season 9 Shore decided to make a wrap and give the show a proper ending. Eith a procedural he wouldn't have minded to keep going till they cancelled and just not doing more episodes.
On David Shore mind House is a proper series with beginning and ending however in many tv watchers minds House is a show like CSI. my family members who liked it, they watched it that way ( as a tv show like they watched the big bang theory) They enjoyed the episodes they saw but they didn't watch from start to finish and didn't see the evolution of the character.
Correct if im wrong but the only other series which has been seen bith ways : as a series or just a tv show to watch once in a while is Sex and The city. You could watch it as a tv program and enjoy the episodes you caught ob tv like Two and half men and friends but the fans watched it as a real series like if it was 24 or desperate Housewives.

I see it as a Medical Sherlock Holmes, so it is procedural as once you have seen the first 4 or so episodes you notice they use the same formula every ep.
I think they started off with stand alone episodes but later on they did start to bring in ongoing storylines.
Can't comment on Sex and the City.

Are you confusing "series" with "serial"? Of course it's a series. It's not a serial.
