when dealing with those who not only drink the kool-aid, but who are attached via hose to a fifty five gallon drum, i find it necessary to carry a barf bag when they come within fifty feet of me. christians find it impossible to separate their spirit mumbling's from the other voices in their heads. Especially if you bring up any form of reality-based reasoning. It causes visible brain swelling and can lead to the messiest kinds of clean ups. How's tricks?? Dealing with family issue still, so the barf bag box needs to be replenished. Dealing with doctors and social services and forms and insurance and finances, but the rest of the family "prays for me"... uh oh... i remember way back in my twenties/thirties when my family 'prayed for me', while i was the one who took care of mom and dad for years. of course, after they passed, the family was all too ready to become actively involved in the estate of mom and dad. LOLOL jesus indeed works in mysterious self-interested ways.

What do consider our (USA) current legal system, chopped liver?
Laws, (do not kill), judges, prosecuting attorneys, defense attorneys, juries of peers, etc. No god required, just fines, sentences, judgements, appeals and possibly jail time in this lifetime, not eternity.
Honestly, why do you even bring these easily contested points up at all?
The current system in the USA is in crazy debt and Trump is not only not stopping it where it is, he's making it worse. Honestly, why do you even bring these easily contested points up at all? (PKB)

You criticizing others for being intoxicated makes me wish I had stock in irony meters. Think of the sales. He isn't the one that believes in a Sky Daddy. On that note, this is a good time to issue a reminder to update your irony meter insurance. For some the need is well above average! Who's your daddy? Or who was it who told you lunar eclipses prove the Earth is sphere and you just believed as if it was your daddy? Of course I'm not saying the Earth is a flat circle. I know it's approximately spherical. I also know that lunar eclipses are no great proof of it.

I've had to contend with a bit of the interest in the estate thing, too, but that part of the family is on my father's side. Only one of my mother's blood relatives have stayed in touch with her, and he is still fairly distant. My Dad's relatives are local and occasionally try to pry or in some way establish a connection, but I am really the only person my mother can count on, and the demands are growing as she ages. My best friend, a retired accountant, has been more help than any of the 'relatives'. "Two hands working do more than a thousand clasped in prayer."

Their observations gave them a crude estimate for Earth's diameter, with much less precision than Eratosthenes' technique of comparing the mid-day altitudes of the sun, but it was good evidence for the basic shape of the Earth.

the soaring twenties
recalling when flappers wheeled shirts around revealing no underwear to be found surely has to be better than mitch mcconnell once again going down on a president who thinks being profound lies in dragging one's stomach inches off a ground we earnestly refer to as zero all the while dancing around in blood raked hospital gowns we now see as the business of getting down.

You're obviously going to believe whatever you want. I don't believe you could estimate the Earth's diameter if you had giant Earth sized calipers. What do you mean regardless of orientation? There's only one orientation for a lunar eclipse. Perhaps you mean the phases of the moon. Still that would just prove that the moon isn't totally flat any more than the Earth is totally flat. It could be "higher" in the middle. Then there's that problem with the fact that the same side of the moon always faces the Earth. Now if that didn't happen it would be easy to see the moon is a sphere. Even that however would not prove the Earth is a sphere. What is your opinion on "Occam's Razor"? You haven't really proved the Earth is a sphere at all, much less easier than my proof. You seem to forget, or perhaps you never knew, I made excellent grades in all of my quite many classes. I'm not some kid waiting for the internet to give me grades on anything. But thanks for proving no kid should depend on the internet for any information. That is a goal of this project, to teach the hazards of depending on the herd. Records of your (plural) stupidity will be instrumental in bringing the price and volume of it down. Again thanks for that.

You're obviously going to believe whatever you want. I don't believe you could estimate the Earth's diameter if you had giant Earth sized calipers. Projecting much? Orientation of the earth. I thought this was trivially obvious but I'll spell it out for Mr. Projector: a lunar eclipse can happen at any time of the day (in a given spot on Earth), so if the earth were coin shaped, a lunar eclipse at 6 pm would not be circular but shaped like a slot (elongated rectangle). The only shape that casts a circular shadow no matter how it's oriented (there are 2 degrees of freedom here, spin and axial tilt) is a sphere. Nope, it's lunar eclipses (see above). Occam's Razor has some utility when evidence is lacking to make a selection among competing theories. Clearly that does not apply to the question of the shape of the Earth. Neither you nor I need to prove that the Earth is a sphere, that was demonstrated by scientific inquiry beginning with the Ancient Greeks and the work of others later. All we need to do is understand their reasoning. I do, not sure about you. Your talking out your ass again, and assuming that you're the only one here that has "excellent grades" (which, given your sloppy thinking, I have some trouble believing). Well, guess what? You're not! Edit -- correction: there are actually 3 degrees of freedom for rotation of a body in 3 dimensional space. For the Earth example that would be spin and two axial tilts: axial tilt moving the North Pole toward the sun and axial tilt moving the North Pole in the direction of Earth's orbit (assuming, of course, that the Earth has a North Pole. )

If it's noon in Greece, no one is going to see a lunar eclipse from Greece. Now if they compare notes with Native Americans by smoke signals, oh wait no, they'll need an internet. Very near sunset is different. Still for the sun to be visible above or at one horizon and the moon to be visible above or at the other horizon, the moon can't be in the shadow of the Earth. As the moon begins to dip below the horizon you might catch a brief view of an eclipse, if you are on some great height like Mt. Olympus (see my proof, ask for the formula) but it will not be enough of one to recognize a curve. That is going to be some very sketchy data, especially considering that the Earth's atmosphere bends sunlight somewhat into the Earth's shadow. Do you even know there was such an eclipse? In what year was that? Or a "flat" Earth with a wrinkle near an edge. You tend to jump from things not being perfectly flat to assuming they must therefore be a sphere. It does not necessarily follow. The Earth is very wrinkled, especially around Greece. Furthermore even if the Earth were the "coin" shape you imagine the straight shadow would only be straight for a very brief moment, as described above, except even more brief, so it's important not to blink much. Furthermore the shadows of circles and spheres can appear straight if a small enough arc is the only part of the shadow you can see, for example at the very beginning of an eclipse. What else we might know is not relevant to my point. My proof is simple, easy and repeatable even on cloudy days. Yours requires a lunar eclipse you aren't even certain happened, no clouds, and precision not available to Greeks. ~~~~~===*===~~~~~
I never said I was the only one here with excellent grades. As of this moment though it does appear that you have yet to find any flaw in my proof despite your repeated efforts. Obviously your story was not found in any book, at least not the way you tell it. I suppose these articles you "scientists" are always getting excited about could have been written deliberately to trap people like you. Consider that. You also have yet to present your argument for the existence of Antarctica, or that people on marijuana can process large quantities of text with ease.

If it's noon in Greece, no one is going to see a lunar eclipse from Greece. Now if they compare notes with Native Americans by smoke signals, oh wait no, they'll need an internet. The Greeks didn't make their observations comparing results with those in distant location, they made them by observing multiple eclipses at different times of the day. You seem to be being deliberately obtuse. You may have noticed that in the summer the sun spends quite a bit more than 12 hours in the visible sky. Something like this happens for all objects in the sky. It's not at all unlikely to observe a full lunar eclipse at 6pm. Also I already mentioned earlier in this thread that the Greeks didn't achieve any accuracy with this type of observation; it only suggested to them the shape. The first good size data came from Eratosthenes' experiments comparing summer soltice Sun angles at Alexandria and Aswan (as I also mentioned earlier) Ridiculous argument. The earth, whatever its shape, has an extent of thousands of miles, while mountains don't even reach 10 miles in height. Your argument is like saying that a Lincoln Penny could always cast a circular shadow if only the bas-relief image of Lincoln were exaggerated enough. As for the rest of your argument, it's irrelevant since the only shape observed was an arc. Then why did you bring up Occam's Razor? ~~~~~===*===~~~~~ Perhaps not, however your statement "You seem to forget, or perhaps you never knew, I made excellent grades in all of my quite many classes" reminds me of the point in Lawrence of Arabia where Sherif Ali boast to Lawrence that he can "both read and write"! I read it about 50 years ago when I was a kid in this book (which is unfortunately out of print). If you have any curiosity about how we understand the scale of the universe and aren't an astronomy major (or perhaps even if you are) this book is highly recommended. In my earlier response to you question of my opinion of Occam's Razor, I said And that remark applies to Antarctica as well. I could do a Google search to find out the history of the discovery of Antarcica, or of America, or of Greenland, etc., and if I followed the links to Wikipedia I'd get the same answers as if I looked it up in the Encyclopedia Britannica or in the national archives of the countries involved in those explorations (except the case of Greenland). Your suggestion that penguins prove the existence of Antarctica is as ridiculous as your "mountainous Greece" suggestion. How about this: you elaborate on how you would prove the existence of Saskatchewan or that Oliver Cromwell was a historical figure? I'm prepared to believe the contrary when someone can provide some evidence.

Who told you that? Always one half of the Earth is in sunlight, the other half is in the shadow of the first half. That is always true no matter the season. Because of the tilt of the axis of rotation to the plane marking those halves your city might spend more time in the light half and less in the dark half, but they are still equal halves all the time. Your city cannot be in the light half and the dark half at the same time. It can only be on the border between the halves very briefly. In order to see a lunar eclipse you need to be in the dark half. In order to see the sun you need to be in the light half. As I already explained that is not possible except for a brief moment from a considerable height as you cross the plane marking the halves. There are no "different times of the day" for lunar eclipses. It's amazing how often it seems that way. Very little escapes me. I was already familiar with that. It is still not as easy as my way. People who have never been to the edge of the world, or rather around it, wouldn't know all that. Not any more.

People who have never been to the edge of the world, or rather around it, wouldn't know all that. Maybe on Planet Arlon the Greeks were unaware of India and Gibraltar. In the real world that is not the case, and they knew well the distances to those parts. Why not grow a pair and admit that you made a ridiculously lame argument. You didn't address the part of my previous post most pertinent to the assertion that prompted our dealings in this thread. Let me recap: Here you said (replying to baldwombat) And in my last post I said If you don't have a mind to address my last sentence, that's fine. I'm sure on Planet Arlon they have plenty of trophy shops --- go out and buy yourself a nice shiny bowling trophy.

Even if they assumed Gibraltar signaled the edge of the world, and even they could see a curved shadow on the moon near sunset (which they could not and cannot), that would only mean the world had to be much bigger than they thought, not necessarily a sphere. Showing that the level of the water is curved as in my proof suggests only a sphere, with the necessary gravity toward its center to be a sphere from which things would not fall off. Some days are slower than others. The cartography of highly populated areas. Proving the existence of individuals after so many centuries is quite the challenge. I would require many carefully guarded records. Something much bigger like the political movement in which he participated is more obvious and easier to prove. ~~~~~===*===~~~~~ What I really wanted was to be a forest ranger.
