It was predictable, and Nike must have known sticking their noses in the hornets nest would cause this. Where's the upside for them in this? Whether he was right or wrong, he's deeply unpopular. I wonder what the shareholders will have to say if profits nosedive.
I think burning their gear and cutting their logo off of it is a little too dramatic. People are so wound up nowadays, it's crazy. OK, you disagree with Kaepernick. His protest isn't harming you in any way. You THINK it does as you go overboard in your moral outrage, but really, it's not. Meanwhile, it's fine to disagree with Nike. Just don't buy any more of their stuff. And at least donate the stuff you don't want any more so someone will get some use out of it instead of destroying it.
btw, without stating a view either way on his protest, I back his grievance against the NFL. It was painfully obvious that teams froze him out - some QB who got signed hadn't even thrown a pass in like 4 years.

Speaking of poor marketing decisions, Pepsi is bringing back Michael Jackson as a figure in their marketing. I know they're going for recapturing past glory, but I don't think he's the best name to dredge up from the past given the multiple allegations against him.

Of course I disagree with the furore. It's been completely ridiculous from both the yays and the nays. I can't belueve there's so much talk about a fair to middling QB who was probably quite rightly a back up when all this rubbish started.

It was predictable, and Nike must have known sticking their noses in the hornets nest would cause this. Where's the upside for them in this? Whether he was right or wrong, he's deeply unpopular. I wonder what the shareholders will have to say if profits nosedive. I really don't get this idea that their profits are going to take a hit, much less nosedive. I saw Hannity smugly wagging his chin about how Nike was down 3% yesterday. The entire market was down yesterday, ass. Adidas was down 2%! September is historically a cold stock market so this hawking the fact that Nike dipped yesterday is asinine. Fodder for people who have no conception as to how the stock market works. If anything, if I'm a Nike stockholder and their stock price crumbles, I'm doubling down. A company like Nike has done just fine in the Zappos and Amazon world, whereas other companies like Blockbuster and Toys R Us completely failed to adapt and when they did, it was too late. As to their profits (which are not necessarily tied to stock price), I just don't see them falling beyond normal quarter-over-quarter fluctuations. Their intellectual property is some of the most valuable on the planet. Its value isn't going anywhere anytime soon and the licensing alone is worth billions ($32b last year). Their 10-year NFL deal isn't going anywhere. Their countless licensing, co-branding, manufacturing, exclusive supply and promotion agreements aren't going anywhere. A few yahoos on youtube burning their shoes isn't going to suddenly send the company into a death spiral. For every person they lose, they'll gain another from their targeted demographic - teenagers (more on that below). Lastly, of course they knew what would happen, as you suggested. Companies the size of Nike don't change toilet paper in their corporate headquarters without conducting countless hours of market research. They knew exactly the backlash they'd face from a loud minority and they knew the new customers they'd attract. The reality is that other companies that have stepped into the political fire, whether deliberately or otherwise, have survived relatively unscathed. Chick-fil-A, Yeti, Hobby Lobby, Keurig, all of them are humming along just fine. A little bit of moral outrage from people who easily succumb to political theater won't change that (although Keurig is headed for an inevitable fall as people realize how awful their product is for the environment, but that's another issue). That applies to both sides of the aisle too. Fuck Chick-fil-A for their archaic bullshit.....but god damm if they don't make a quality chicken sandwich for a fast food chain. The market research is where they see the upside. Whether right or wrong, they're gambling on said market research which tells them that teenagers today are more in tune with political issues then we give them credit for, that they want brands that take a stand on one side or the other, that don't just sit idly by in an attempt to not cause waves. The idea that by trying to please everyone, you end up pleasing nobody. Is it a risk? Sure, but I don't see it causing any material hurting on their profits. When their 10K comes out next year, we can all take a look at it and not rely on Breitbart or Trump tweets to tell me about #failingNike.

I just don't understand people's obsession with him or the anthem kneeling. It's like they're just out there LOOKING for something to get angry about or offended by. I also think the people threatening to boycott Nike are dumb and will forget about it in 6 months anyway. Nike isn't going to be harmed by this at all.

I do not get why people are so outraged by the anthem protests, it just shows the mass brainwashing and worship of authority that is going on in America.
I do not think this will hurt Nike, as for every right wing nut that stops purchasing Nike’s you will gain support from younger people, who are Nike’s main customers anyway.

Starbucks H&M Uber Waffle House FedEx WalMart Chick Fil A
Countless other boycotted for various reasons, all companies still doing just fine. This will be a blip for Nike that will be forgotten in a few weeks when the next company does something that gets everyone's panties in a bunch.

You missed the "Couldn't give a shit, I'm neither hysterical nor 'triggered', and couldn't pick him out of a lineup if my life depended upon it anyway" option. I would have selected that.

Nike might have solved the whole taking a knee issue.
Not only does Kaepernick get a shoe deal, but he also gets a cleat deal, I think, so anybody who wants to express support can wear his shoes off the field, and/ or cleats on the field.
That is marketing genius. Is this the first time a company has managed to politicize their footwear?
The snag, though, could be when people get harmed for wearing Kaepernicks, but for now, let's roll them out.

I don't care either way however I think in the end, this will bite Nike in the butt.
And let's on forget, this is a guy who was wearing a Castro shirt and pig socks. He's no civil rights fighter in any shape or form.

He's no civil rights fighter in any shape or form. This will have no effect on Nike, just like all the other companies people protest for whatever reason.
