Boy howdy, did the Angels screw this up. Should have shut him down long ago. See you in 2020.

Just replace pitchers with high tech pitching machines. The pitcher can stand behind it to field his position.

I'm sorry the dude's elbow is shot, but I was really getting annoyed with the overhype surrounding him.

I'm sorry the dude's elbow is shot, but I was really getting annoyed with the overhype surrounding him. 10 to 1 he never pitches again. The Angels have to get something out of him. That something will be the bat rather than risk him blowing out his elbow again.
Damned if I know why they didn't shut him down in June. We all seen this coming, trying to play both ends. Now they have nothing for another year. Piss poor run organization.

It's not over-hype. This dude has the potential to be the greatest player in history. I don't even know how they can come up with an accurate valuation for the guy, he confounds all sabermetrics.
How much do you pay a guy who can win 20 games per year pitching, and hit over .300 with who knows how many homers and RBI's? 60 million per?
After his surgery was announced, he came out and hit another homer! What the hell?
I'm really sad to hear about his Tommy John, I know he will be back as a great hitter. But the great pitcher is in question. It will be a real shame if he can't pitch again.
Not my team at all, but I'm cheering for the guy on sheer ability. There has never been anyone like him (2 way) since Babe Ruth.

I could be wrong, but I think they're only paying him half a million per year - plus they had to buy out his contract for 20 million with the Hiroshima isotopes, or something.
I guarantee you, even with the surgery announced, ANY team in the league would take that chance.
I know my lowly Tigers would love to have him.
Lots of guys can throw 100mph, few can pitch at this level (control). And he's already demonstrated the ability to pitch at this level. Toss in a .300 batting average and 20 plus homers per year.
Jeesh.
Madbum has a pretty decent batting average for a pitcher, but nothing like this!

question for baseball gurus here.
let's say they put off 'Tommy John' and decide just to use him as a hitter.
obviously Ohtani is a rare case - any chance they just 'nix' any pitching going forward - and he 'rehabs' over the offseason and they use him strictly as a hitter.
tommy john is pretty much one of the ugliest/scariest terms out there for pitchers - correct me if I'm wrong - some pitchers over the years have come back; however it's a long grueling return where you're pretty much toast for the rest of the year - the following year and who knows about the following
is ohtani worth it as an 'everyday' player to just shut him down as a pitcher and rehab him during the offseason; or is his 'pitching' and 'whole package' what makes him so valuable.
also - wasn't there an everyday player this year (i.e. not a pitcher) where it was reccomended he have 'Tommy John'? - i.e. he was a positional player. so is Tommy John a necessity - or something Ohtani can rehab if he gives up pitching?

If I have my facts right, Japanese teams don't have to give out the injury info that NA teams do. The Fighters (love that name, team owned by Nippon Ham. They don't fight ham) said it was his ankle that troubled him. Per Baseball Reference, he can't become a FA until 2024 and I can't see how his arm will hold up that long. And who knows how his batting numbers will look if he doesn't have to pitch. But he won't have that "Babe Ruth" effect. Can he play the field?

I didn't know who he played for and didn't feel like looking it up, so yeah you caught me, I tossed in a Simpsons reference! The kid has enormous potential - whether it will be realized at this point is unknown. I love baseball so I watch all the teams, even when my teams suck, and the Angels got enormous potential. Nice to see the Astros win with Verlander last year, looking forward to seeing the Angels in the WS some time soon.
