Snuff
-This mid-70s gimmick of a film helped fan the flames of fiction, even though its 100% fake as shit. Most of it is an unfinished killer hippies movie very obviously inspired by the Manson family, that was never finished. Some bright spark heard of snuff film rumours, and a fake ending was tacked on, supposedly showing a female cast member being mutilated for real. It didn't fool pathologists hired to examine it, yet when it was banned in the UK, excitable stupid people insisted it was real.
Emanuelle in America
-One of the Black Emanuelle series, mostly its typical softcore 70s Italian smut, with a brief foray into near-beastiality (naked chick jerks off a stallion) and a bit of hardcore. Where the film tends to alienate 99% of its audience are the scenes showing characters viewing snuff footage, and its pretty damn horrific, its one of the nastiest scenes I've ever seen. Its mostly latex FX and you see less than you think, but they do a good job at making it look realistic.
Cannibal Holocaust
-The most infamous of Italy's forays into cannibalism. Found footage was not yet a thing, so many a dumbass thought the handheld stuff was real. It isn't....for humans. Animals, unfortunately, like other films in this subgenre, are offed for real. Also...none of the footage shot for this movie had people dying....The stock footage however, meant to be from an earlier documentary the psychopathic film crew made, shows people being executed for real. 😯
Faces of Death
-This does actually contain a few real deaths, but its all stock footage (JFK assassination, for example), or animals being killed in slaughterhouses and chicken farms. The rest is utter bullshit.
Anthropophagous the Beast
-This boring waste of time has a scene where the crazed killer throttles a pregnant woman, rips the foetus from her womb, and eats it. Even though it is obviously not real, the video nasties hysteria was enough to make a few in the UK think so.
Guinea Pig: Flower of Flesh and Blood
-This Japanese sickie has a loony in a samurai kit mutilate a woman. End of story. Allegedly, Charlie Sheen watched it and thought it was real, and contacted the Feds.
BONUS
Three Kings
-The graphic scenes of internal wounds caused by bullets made some cops think the scenes were being filmed by miniature cameras mounted on bullets that were being fired into real bodies.
Extra bonus!
-Conservative British press initially referred to the more extreme examples of anime as "snuff cartoons'. 😦
