It's our household tradition to go grocery shopping once per week and to plan out five dinners to be fulfilled on said expedition. Does your trip to the market revolve around carefully-planned meals or do you wing it?
This week's menu reflects the changing season (everything made from scratch, including the rolls and the salsa, excluding "chips"):
tuscan chicken and rice
creamy white chicken chili and dinner rolls
italian subs and chips
steak pita pockets with spicy, fried cheese bites
beef empanadas and salsa/chips

I would call my routine a cross between planning and "winging." I live alone, so I can do what I choose.
I usually go to the supermarket early (6:00/6:30 AM) on Saturday, but much of what I buy, then, is not necessarily for dinner. I fill-in on staples on which I'm running low, and and some household items.
I might buy meats on Saturday. Chicken figures into my dinner menu about twice a week. I like to buy a whole bird, and practice my surgical skills, so I can choose the pieces I want for thawing, according to that day's whim. And, a nice London Broil is easily divided into several portions that are available any time. I also pick up ground-beef, as needed. For roasts, chops and fish, I go to a full butcher shop that is a 3 "plus" mile round-trip walk ... I sometimes cheat, and drive, but usually walk.
My neighborhood has several wonderful independent produce stores, and I buy from them almost exclusively. That's not planned, in advance. I walk the 2-6 blocks to get what I want, when I want it.
A popular restaurant chain that offers a variety of crusty breads, has their main bakery near me. And, there are some small European markets that carry wonderful rye breads.
So, again, I guess it's more of a routine, than fully thought out plan.

WKD likes to have a weekly menu which is great for me, we rarely change it. Mondays is always steak for him, Wednesday is fish for him and Fridays are pizza and salad for both of us. The other days we plan according to what I have in the freezer. We usually eat the same things over and over, there are about 12 different things I'm always making. We old, boring people.
