There is a discussion megatopic called /r/Catholicism on reddit, which is supposed to be a forum for airing all sorts of different points of view relating to Catholicism, as long as they aren't overtly anti-Catholic. The majority of posts there are pretty disappointing--extremely anti-Pope Francis, for example. Someone started a topic the other day complaining that he was afraid his in-laws would corrupt his children because they are not sufficiently orthodox Catholic. Apparently, the in-laws are Catholic and go to mass periodically, but from this guy's viewpoint, they might as well be heathens because they don't toe the line. A bunch of other posters were complaining in another thread about how Pope Francis has soiled the catechism by changing it to say that killing another human is always a sin, including in cases of capital punishment.

I guessing the forum will mostly attract those Catholics who are feeling besieged in one way or another by providing a place for them to vent. So, it wouldn't be a truly representative sample of Catholics in general.

I think some who claim to be Catholic are pretty much Catholic in name only as many don't even go to Mass regularly (as in weekly as that's a required minimum along with holy days of obligation(roughly a handful of occasions a year) unless one is sick or has a other legitimate reason to miss Mass) which is not optional if one is going to be a practicing Catholic. missing weekly Mass for no reason is more serious than it seems like. hell, even when it comes to regular prayer (as in daily prayer) I suspect many neglect this to which is also not optional but required if one is going to grow closer to God and avoid sin etc. without regular prayer... it's not going to be long before they just stop going to Mass etc. basically they will become more worldly and the world is contrary to Jesus a good portion of the time. plus, ill bet there is many who ignore the Catholic Church's teachings on stuff like contraception etc. but for someone only going to Mass occasionally it's a pretty safe bet they are not praying regularly and will likely ignore many of the Church's moral teachings they don't like etc. basically, they are Catholic in name only. but anyways... Google says there are 1.2-1.3 billion Catholics in the world. but ill bet it's much less in terms of practicing Catholics as it seems many only go there to get married and then pretty much vanish or maybe attend Mass on Christmas and that's about it. from a quick look online I found a article from Feb 2014 that pretty much says only about 1/3rd(33%) those who identify as Catholic attend mass on a weekly basis, at least here in the USA. or about 1/5th(20%) counting everyone who was raised Catholic. that's not good just some thoughts p.s. I am not claiming to be a saint or nothing, as we all got our own faults/sins, but if someone wants to be legitimate Catholic you got to at least keep up with the minimums like weekly Mass, regular prayer(even if it's a limited amount of time in ones day) etc. I can see that persons concern. but the problem is... the world is pretty corrupt in the moral dept and seems difficult, if not impossible, to keep ones kids away from the immorality of the world. like they are inevitably going to stumble into that stuff at some point and you just hope you can teach them right from wrong and they don't drift too far off-the-rails. basically I know parents want to keep their kids away from the slightest harm, be it physical or moral etc, but it's going to be very difficult in today's world. hell, I suspect trying to get a young person (say kids/teens/20's etc) to pray regularly is not going to be easy either which without that it's just going to be that much more likely they go-off-the-rails on some level. hell, I rarely prayed at one point etc. I don't know exactly what he said but I can say that killing another human is not always a sin because there are cases of self defense where killing is justified. so just given this info, killing another human being can't be wrong 100% of the time. although in cases of abortion it's nearly always wrong outside of stuff like mothers life is in danger etc but at that point it's not done to kill the baby but to save the mothers life where as a typical abortion is done with the intent to kill the baby which is wrong.
