I've been wondering the same thing.
I ordered two 'Harry Hole' books, they're supposed to be good.
I want the novel equivalent of 'Columbo' or 'Midsomer Murders'.

The Monster of Florence - Nonfiction thriller about the notorious series of murders in the Italian foothills. At one point, the authors themselves were accused of being the killer.

PORTRAIT OF A KILLER. our boy JACK! BULLY. they made a movie about it and I saw the movie first on IFC about 15 years ago or so. then I found the book. can you believe they thought this guy on the left could pass for this guy?

could be fiction and non fiction as well. You might laugh, but both "Psycho" and "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" were genre books before they were made into movies. "Psycho" is a good, dark scary read (especially as it is based on a true crime; re: Ed Gein) "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane", on the other hand, is really revelation of all the deeply toxic stuff that can so very easily go down in families, guilt, secrets, lies, regret, recriminations, jealousy, hatred... the list of horrors is a long one... The movie was good and highly enjoyable, but the book goes about 4 levels deeper and really gets at what can happen if you keep a passive stance your whole life and how awful stuff will eventually surface if the parties involved do not keep the bile in check. It's a horror book, but also with quite a bit of depth, especially regarding the characterizations. Baby Jane Judson was a particularly sympathetic and complex character.

I adore the first run Columbo episodes. Kind of the tv equivalent to an Agatha Christie murder mystery. Though she's almost the opposite of what I'd call perturbing; they're is a reason why they call her books "cozy mysteries"

I'd suggest just about anything from Harlan Coben. The Woods and Play Dead are two good murder mystery's by him.
