Comedy these days is either too safe or too stupid or both.

Political correctness has killed humor.

There are not many straight comedy movies that stand out from the pack in general. so I don't think it can really be dying as there was never really that many worth mentioning to begin with.
but trying to look at things more on a mainstream level... it almost does seem like people who were names not all that long ago seem to be off the radar lately and now we are mostly stuck with random junk to fill the void.

Well it's getting hurt by bad and/or lackluster films.

Not long ago Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller were seemingly in everything. Hit comedies. One after the other. What happened to them? What was the last big comedy hit? Who is the big name in comedy right now? You pick three actors, two of whom (at least) are not funny. Nowadays it's Melissa McCarthy, also not funny.

Comedies don't do as well oversees as action/aventure/fatnasy/etc now that China is becoming an increasing market for American films. It's probably no surprise the highest grossing comedy of 2018 was "Crazy Rich Asians".

Comedy has always been very hit-or-miss IMO. The small screen is where a lot of the best comedy ends up. Though there's plenty of dross there as well.

I think people needed to laugh when Obama was in White House. Now that Trump is POTUS no major wars, great economy and everybody is happy , so we don't need a distraction.

Well we were getting a lot of our comedic actors from Saturday Night Live but now what the hell is going on Saturday Night Live I think that has a big thing to do with it. also you look at Marvel movies have a lot of comedy in them and it seems like most energy gets put into those type of movies and less into just straight action or comedy movies. also think of ideas comedy really almost has to be an original idea this year we've gotten comedy based off true story and also a novel but there is far less to pick from for comedy it's not like comic books where there's a billion of them. So quite frankly people have just ran out of ideas.

Done correctly, laughter is not a bandage. It's something you access to make sense of the world. Let your vision be as small as you'd like. Seems pretty fvckin small, all things considered.
