Jordan and Coogler seem like a long shot. The rest seem plausible.

Jordan and Coogler seem like a long shot.Β The rest seem plausible. Yeah, "lock" is a pretty strong word. I haven't heard any buzz about them getting nods. Best Picture is possible, with up to 10 nominations.

I do not understand the fascination with this movie. It's such a silly and juvenile movie!!!!! I'm shocked it made so much money at the box office. It must be because of the novelty aspect of it (black superhero film). If it were to get a Best Picture nomination, it would just be a case of Hollywood throwing them a bone. Compare it to a genuinely great superhero film like Batman Begins, which by the way did NOT get a Best Picture nomination.

I don't think it any more deserving of Oscar nominations than say, Avengers, is. Nominating a film because the people voting feel it's time for an all black effort in filmography to be nominated, does a disservice to all films, actors and cinema in general.

Maybe a director nod for Coogler, maybe an acting nod for Jordan, maybe best picture nod to recognize that this was a cultural phenomena, which is a legit reason for a nod. But I don't think a win is remotely in the cards or deserved in any case, at least in these categories.
However, I would be very much in favor of the movie winning best costume design.

Black Panther is indeed a lock. It has nothng to do with the quality of the movie and all to do with being PC.

Black Panther exceeded at world building.
