This film has so much going for it... It looks rather nice, has a great old world hammer-ish atmosphere of an old creaky house, some eerie special effects that really work, a solid cast of veteran actors and young talents, some nice cinematography of the Irish country exteriors and the lifeless house interiors, and a dour and somber tone that is sold all the way through...
And yet it was ultimately rather bland. The main concept of what is going on is never sold or explained properly and the story plods along at too leisurely a pace. Its characters never rise above being simple archetypes, and some of the best details are left essentially unexplored.
It has some great imagery and dramatic moments, but it feels kind of hollow. A shame really.
