What is you favorite obscure Horror/Suspense/Thrillers with excellent horror creepy atmosphere/sets in movies?
I'd say that every single horror film I like is a direct result of the movie's atmosphere. A good scary movie must have great atmosphere
But, to give examples.
"Blood and Black Lace" - (1964), those lush, lush colors - that's some psychotic, candy cane alternate universe Mario Bava created. "Black Sabbath" is a super close second.
And his b&w horror counterpart, William Castle. My favorite of WC's atmospheric horror gems could any one of four, "Homicidal", "Strait Jakcet", "I Saw What You Did!" and "Night Walker".
"The Innocents" (1961) and my vote for scariest movie of all time!
I also think John Carpenter's "Halloween" and "The Fog" rate tops on atmosphere.
"College Girl Murders"
Also, "Creepshow" & "The Funhouse" are high on ghoulish atmosphere
If you're looking for something different, check out "Eyes Without a Face". It definitely has atmosphere and it's very creepy.
The 1945 version of "And Then There Were None" is the final word in cozy murder mystery, and I really liked the 1975 version, too. Again, for the atmosphere.
"Cat People" (1942)
"Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974)
"Rosemary's Baby" (1968)
"The Tenant" (1976)
You also requested obscure, not sure if any of these are obscure.
"The Baby" (1973) is just plain down right creepy. And a very, very good movie in its own right.
"The Killing Kind" (1973) is creepy and more than worth checking out.
Again, maybe not all that obscure, but Brian De Palma's 1973 "Sisters" is very chilling and creepy
Are you familiar with Dario Argento? If you're a horror buff, then he doesn't qualify as obscure, but if you don't have a solid knowledge base of horror films, then you should definitely check him out. His films are verrrry atmospheric. Many people will cite "Suspiria" as his best, and it's great, but my personal favorite is "Phenomena". Beautiful chiller, with some set pieces that are hauntingly atmospheric.
And Henri-Georges Clouzot, particularly "Les Diaboliques"
"Carnival of Souls" has gained a following in the past 25 years, but it's low-budget and creepy and has really good atmosphere.
I've not seen it, but many cite "Dead of Night" (1945) as being superior in its chilling atmosphere
"Last Year at Marienbad" is really not a horror film (what kind of film is it, though?), but I will say it is the most visually elegant, beautiful film I have ever seen and likely ever will see.
Okay, I'll warp this post up with a good one: "Horror Hotel", low-budget, somewhat obscure (or is it?), very creepy and quite tense! This is the one you should watch! And it's up on Youtube!
Horror Hotel...
