Are we supposed to feel any sympathy at all towards Mildred? Because Francis plays an unsympathetic stone cold bitch with a black heart.
It got to the point where I hated her character that I liked seeing her lose with the police not finding the killer.
The only likable character was Willoughby.

The whole theme of that movie is people acting rashly without thought of the consequences to other people. Mildred acts rashly out of her grief and hurts other people, gets to the point where she has maybe stopped caring about anything except hurting other people. So it is fair to say that she is not an entirely sympathetic character.

That angle was fascinating to me. But the rest of the time, I wasn't particularly swayed by her grandstanding monologues like she's on some talk show. It felt like a check list. Oh the racist cop is in frame, talk about police brutality! Oh the priest is here, let's talk about child abuse! McDormand certainly isn't slouching to her credit.

I thought you were such a bleeding heart you consider Quint the villain of Jaws and not the monster shark? Surely you can empathize with Mildred.
To answer your question, it's a movie about flawed characters, Mildred included.

We don’t embrace our sympathy for Mildred because she won’t allow it. To a fault even. She’s angry at everything because of what happened to her daughter and she’s fairly destructive, self and otherwise. Same with Dixon in a lot of ways. Neither of them are particularly nice people...but that doesn’t make them irredeemable.

Maybe she should have sung a few songs.... She could have been more understanding. The cops are doing all they can with what they have to find the killer. Instead she becomes this passive/aggressive POS. It's a very negative and depressing movie. Not that those movies shouldn't be made but at least try to get us to care about the main character in some way instead of us hating them.

I understood her character and felt sympathy towards her. It is a terrific and complex performance imo. The whole point is that she has become a very bitter and angry women. Not every movie should be about nice understanding characters and this is one of the best movies about an extremely flawed and mean character, but very human at the same time. Same with Sam Rockwell's character and both find a certain amount of redemption at the end.
It isn't as if the town has the best cops. It is about the public's distrust of the police.
Her character has always been somewhat rough though, even before the death of her daughter. The movie is about what can happen to someone's personality after something unthinkable happens.

It's also about her being a selfish passive/aggressive C U Next Tuesday. She could have been sympathetic towards Willoughby and shown some compassion towards him.
