If you like stupid horror movies, watch it. Its good. Relative to other stupid horror movies, its good.
If you don't like stupid horror movies, don't watch it. It is stupid.
SPOILERS !!!
What kind of lady lives out in the woods all by herself with no security system? No gun? No dog? No self defense training? No muscle tone?
She was attractive. But obviously not physical. Didn't even seem fit enough to chop wood. Definite rape bait.
And she lives in a house with lots of windows. No window treatments. Anybody can just watch her all night long from the woods, the trees, the darkness.
She had a butcher's block with 4 knives. But she grabs 1 early on in the movie. But then drops it when she gets scared. She spends most of the movie in the house with the killer outside. But she never goes back to the butcher's block. 3 knives never used. Stupid.
Most of the time the victims in horror movies are so stupid, I really don't care if they get killed.
But if you like stupid horror movies, watch it. Relative to other stupid horror movies, its good.
(Movie mistake --- the lady drops the hammer in the bedroom. And the knife in the front room. The killer tries breaking in through the bedroom window. She picks up the hammer but stabs him with the knife.)

I don't remember a lot of these details that you are complaining about, it's been a long time since I've seen it, but I certainly don't doubt any of it. I believe there were some really dumb movie moments in there.
But what was memorable to me was the gimmick of having the lead be a deaf woman and using that pretty effectively in some moments, and liking some of those cat and mouse set pieces, as well the performance of the lead girl.
I don't think I remembered spotting that there were no window treatments, but that is indeed an odd detail that would be weird in anyone's house, let alone this one in this location. But not having a gun or security system doesn't strike me as particularly unusual. They could have included a dog though. That could have been used effectively for some of those earlier scenes when she is just discovering what is going on.
It's certainly not great, but as you said for a dumb home invasion or slasher kind of thing, it's much better than the average. Mike Flanagan is a genuinely solid director.

One thing I usually do during any violent movie --- especially a horror movie with a definite predator and a clear victim --- is think, "How could I avoid being in the victim's situation?" I have martial arts training, gun safety training, I am physical, and I work out. Growing up in the city I am always thinking how to avoid becoming a victim of crime. We have a country house. But I never leave myself exposed and vulnerable like this woman. And I often think, "What would I do if this happened?" I would have been better prepared than this woman. The victims in most horror movies are so stupid I have a hard time caring about them. This lead character was supposedly intelligent. Where does she live that crime is not on her radar? A single attractive deaf and mute woman? Give me a break. Boy scouts have a saying, "Always be prepared." That was a big chance she was taking.

It's not really that big of a chance. I understand that you are prepared with weapons and martial arts training, but I really don't think most people are. I hardly know anybody who owns a gun. You may be overly prepared for a home invader, but I don't think everyone is, and I don't think that makes it unrealistic or makes the character stupid. I don't think all people think that way. The vast majority of people never get attacked by a home invader. You would have been more prepared, I think it's believable enough to say she wouldn't have been.
But all that put together, specifically the lack of window treatments (more than anything else) and an alarm system, are obviously convenient in order to make the movie possible.
Also, naturally we all think about what we would do in a horror scenario, or general movie scenario for that matter, but obviously not all characters have the same background, mindset, and experiences that I do. So I take that into account.
But I agree on the general sentiment: kind of a dumb slasher, but better than most in that category

So I take that into account. But I agree on the general sentiment: kind of a dumb slasher, but better than most in that category I agree. Most people are not as "prepared" as I am. But if you talk to most policemen. Or if you do research. Most victims of crime are either doing something they should not be doing. Or they are being extremely careless. Most cars are stolen because the driver left the doors unlocked and the keys in the car. Most carjackings are because the driver was driving around with the doors unlocked. Most victims of crime were either criminals themselves. Or they just were not paying attention. You are correct. Most people will never be a victim of a home invasion. But of the ones that are, they will either be criminals themselves, or extremely unprepared. I don't want to take the chance. I doubt I will ever be a victim in a horror movie scenario. Not just because the odds are against it. But because I am prepared. Like I said, I have a hard time empathizing or sympathizing with most horror movie victims. And quite frankly, I feel the same way about most real life victims. They should have known better. I guess that is evolution. Thinning the herd. The smart will survive. The dumb and stupid will suffer and/or die.

I'm not trying to convince you to be less prepared, just saying that this scenario is not unbelievable. If you can't sympathize then that's fine, I often can't either, but at the time when I saw this a while back, I found her likeable, mostly intelligent (which does make some of those details less believable), and fairly resourceful.
I don't wanna get into real life victims of crime being deserving of it (an odd take for sure), and I don't even really know how that has come up at this point...
The point was that this was an above average dumb horror movie that is pretty well directed and has a pretty unique gimmick, and therefore doesn't just feel like another ripoff.

I found her attractive and appealing also. Which is why it is harder for me to believe she would be so unprepared for the possibility of crime. And what to do if she is a victim of a criminal attack. I agree, compared to most horror/thrillers --- this was better than average.

It was okay, but there were stupid character actions indeed. And the guy playing the home invader was about as intimidating as the Wet Bandits.

REPLY #1 I never said she being ultimately prepared would make for a good movie. I am just saying there is a middle ground between being ultimately prepared and ridiculously unprepared. Most horror movie victims are ridiculously vulnerable. Which is why I find most horror movies stupid and not entertaining. Most people of a certain financial class have alarm systems. And they either have a dog or some kind of self-defense preparation. As I said in my OP, this is a deaf and mute attractive single woman. Who lives in a secluded house in the country. With no gun, no dog, no husband, no boyfriend, no self-defense skills, and no alarms system. And her house has lots of windows with no window treatments. Anyone can just watch her all day and night from the woods, the trees, and the darkness. She is a criminal's dream !!! How could she be more vulnerable ?? ?? It is ridiculous. She is portrayed as intelligent, accomplished and professional. How many attractive, single, intelligent, accomplished professional women live alone in the country with no security system, no dog, no gun, no man --- nothing? And this particular woman was deaf and mute. Come on !!!

REPLY #2 . . . and being armed and highly trained is no guarantee one is invulnerable to an accomplished serial killer. Having a victim who is highly prepared could still make for a good movie.

But don't you find people acting dumb in horror movies is part of the horror? You, sitting comfortably in your armchair, know exactly what to do, so its kind of horrifying to see these people go to their doom. For me the best example of this is the sister in Oculus. Her plan is so doomed from the start, but because of her promise, she feels obligated to bring back the past and try to prove the mirror is evil, and because of this shortcoming, she dooms herself and her brother.
Also, you can't seriously expect everyone to operate efficiently and logically when placed under such impossible stress levels. That's not human nature.

No. If the victims are too stupid, it ruins any horror for me. No man or woman is invincible. A normally capable victim can get in lots of trouble with a half way competent villain. I can relate to normal and proficient. I cannot relate to retarded. A normal or proficient victim can get scared and/or killed. It is not the case that only retards are vulnerable.

I agree with everything you said except the home invader not being intimidating. I thought he was pretty scary. The dumbest character action I can think of was; when the boyfriend of the neighbor was fighting with the serial killer in the front yard. He had the killer in a choke hold with the neighbor on bottom. And the killer on top. She just stood there and watched. She should have grabbed one of those 4 knives and stabbed the killer while the neighbor had him in the choke hold. He had him incapacitated for a longtime. Plenty of enough time for her to grab a knife and finish him off. And then she could have grabbed one of the many cell phones the killer had collected and called for help. But she just stood there and watched. Stupid.

Yes it’s unrealistic, but that’s what makes it so enjoyable. Personally, I loved the deaf girl and it made me root for her the entire film because of her condition. It’s actually a pretty smart film IMO.

Another opportunity she had to kill the bad guy was after she sprayed him in the face with bug spray, blinding him temporarily. Instead of grabbing the alarm, she should have grabbed one of the remaining knives from the butcher block and stabbed him. She was standing right there in the kitchen.
