Since some posters are miffed about my thread for atheists, I thought I would start one for theists. And, since I am not a theist, I will bow out and let someone else monitor the discussion. Perhaps clusium would do the honors...

Perhaps clusium would do the honors... Thank you, Rachel, though I don't think I could do much in monitoring a topic thread that is free for all to use. However, please allow me to start the conversation. Let's see.... I love that all there is in the beautiful universe was Created By the One Almighty God. To look up a clear, night sky (provided there is no light pollution blocking the stars) gives one a feeling of peace & awe. Anyone else...?

It seems the other theists have said their prayers and gone to bed. When I was a child I was a theist, I grew up in a Catholic neighborhood, and so many of the homes around mine had statues of St. Francis of Assisi, surrounded by animals. I really liked those statues, and the thought that god had created and cared for all of those animals. There was a hymn that was sung in the church I went to; "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me." An early, positive memory...

I'm not certain it's true that I "like" theism. I would have preferred to be a forest ranger. We must all play the cards we're dealt though, for a large part anyway.
One thing I do "like" very much is truth, and I leave my forest ranger post every now and again to clean up the untrue garbage wherever it lies.

You can like theism and be a forest ranger at the same time, they are not mutually exclusive. Truth is a subjective word, but fact is an objective word, and facts can be proven objectively. They are observable, testable, repeatable...

For theists:
Does religion give you a sense of purpose or meaning in life?
Does religion provide a community of like-minded individuals that help each other, like the Amish?
Does religion influence your culture, inspire certain cultural celebrations, like the Mexican 'Dia de los Muertos'.
Does religion buffer the harshness of some of life's troubles?
Just some suggestions...

Just some suggestions... while theist is way too generic a term to answer on that basis, as a Christian 1. Yes 2. No. It provides the ability to live harmoniously with any open minded community. After all, Christianity started as a very small minority of people that existed within communities and societies and, depending on the country, they still exist under that status. Regardless, in the countries Christianity dominates, there is an abundance of freedoms for non-Christians as well. 3. No. I have no cultural celebrations that aren’t secularly celebrated. I don’t celebrate anything contrary to Scripture either. 4. Not really. The world is a harsh place and Christianity does not pretend reality doesn’t exist. What it does is help people deal and understand the plight mankind is in but that isn’t any more buffering as anything else the godless teach themselves to do.

They are observable, testable, repeatable... All words are subjective. A saying in ancient Rome was, "One witness is no witness." That was true in a manner of speaking. There is the "truth" as recognized by courts. However it only takes one witness to establish a fact for that witness. If I saw children destroy a tree and there was no lightning, I have a "fact," although I might be the only one other than the kids who has that fact.

Do you vote because you "like" voting or because you think it's a duty? I have always thought it's a good idea if something is a duty to meditate upon that fact until any grumblings disappear. You know you might as well like it if it's a duty. That works a lot of the time.
