Even though Mr. Yunioshi, the Japanese man played by Mickey Rooney in Breakfast At Tiffany's, is barely in the movie, it was so atrocious that the few minutes he is onscreen seem to be everyone's strongest memory of the film. Rooney regretted it the rest of his life.
Rock Hudson, of all people, was cast as a Native American in some of his earliest films. He was Young Bull in Winchester 73 (1950). His first starring role was the title character in Taza, Son Of Cochise (1954).

I liked Brando in Teahouse … he was very Un-Marlon-y in it. Need to watch it again as my memories of it are from when it was new and I was a tad younger and still liked him in everything!.
Alec Guinness in Cedric Hardwick had played the role Koichi Asano on Broadway so there seemed to be a tradition of casting a very British actor as a Japanese businessman

Robert Taylor plays A full-blooded Native American a Shoshone Indian, Lance Poole. Having distinguished himself in the war and even winning the Medal of Honour, he returns home to Wyoming, to something a far cry from a hero's welcome, prejudice still rules the West...in Anthony Mann's thoughtful drama, Devils Doorway (1950) Charles Bronson plays native Sioux warrior Blue Buffalo in the magnificent Run of the Arrow (1957)

1954 Following the surrender of Geronimo, Massai, the last Apache warrior *is captured and scheduled for transportation to a Florida reservation. Instead, he manages to escape and heads for his homeland to win back his girl and settle down to grow crops. His pursuers have other ideas though. * the last Apache warrior .. probably one of those "there were no survivors at Little Big Horn"

He was in the original film as well as performing many other film and tv Indian roles
As he so often played Native Americans, I was surprised to learn years later that he is an Australian !

Even more embarrassing than Rooney in BREAKFAST was James Whitemore's attempt to pass as an African-American in the 1964 offensive stinker BLACK LIKE ME.
Good book (true story) but poorly dramatized.

Interesting thread I always think it odd that in my lifetime we have gone from actors playing other races being taken as a mark of their versatility, to it being a sign of them wrongly appropriating work from their ethnic minority peers*. One of my favourites not yet mentioned Jennifer Jones in LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDOURED THING which I still think looks great. Also very fond of Robert Helpmann and Flora Robson in 55 DAYS AT PEKING Ava Gardner and Francis Matthews (Let alone Freda Jackson) in BHOWANI JUNCTION, and most observers think Ava did good as the white passing Julie in SHOWBOAT. and I may be in the minority but I like Mr Yunioshi a lot and always hoped he might get his own spin off series (AFTER MR YUNIOSHI , MR YUNIOSHI'S BLONDE TROUBLE, MR YUNIOSHI GOES HAWAIIAN etc) Quite liked Brando too. *Robert Downey Jr got round this effectively in TROPICAL THUNDER by playing an actor "blacking up" and got rave reviews and an oscar nomination... only to be upstaged at the awards by a corpse. Life can be cruel,

BATouttaheck Great surprise to see a mention of the local boy who made good, here he is as a Peruvian ! in Secret of the Incas (1954) An exciting film starring Charlton Heston as the adventurer Harry Steele, on the trail of an ancient Incan artefact . Shot on location in Peru, the film is credited as an inspiration for Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the film generated much interest in the magnificent location at Machu Picchu.. Michael Pate as Pachacutec

Peter Lorre (Austro-Hungarian) as Mr Moto (Japanese) Here he "Takes a Vacation" where he is described as "disguised as an Austrian archaeologist" , Moto helps unearth the priceless crown of the legendary Queen of Sheba and sans disguise defends it from a variety of thugs and criminals.

manfromplanetx I was so used to seeing Michael Pate in Western roles that when I saw him in a Perry Mason episode, I wondered why he was using a fake Australian accent and then I looked him up on IMDb ! He has an interesting and rather exotic look about him ! Always was a favorite !
