Of your choices I went with Amityville, Alien and Phantasm. My fourth choice would have been Dracula. I might rate some higher but I'd have to see them again. It's been decades for some of them. I watched the Brood again recently and thought it was awful. There are a couple Cronenberg movies I love, but I think he tends to be crap more often than not. I also hate Videodrome and Scanners by the way
I don't recall the Brood being that good. Scanners is dry and boring except for the famous head exploding scene.
Videodrome is a mess, but it has its offbeat charms. Even when Cronenberg movies aren't great, at least they're a little more ambitious and interesting than most horror.
Naked Lunch is probably my favorite Cronenberg. I love the visuals and dream-like surrealness. I still need to see Eastern Promises.

I pretty much agree with you here. The story isn't very interesting and the lead actor is pretty bland. I do think Michael Ironside is very scary in it though and I love the gore effects. Naked Lunch is one of his best movies imo.

Scanners is lucky to have the head explosion or it probably would have been completely forgotten except as a small footnote in Cronenberg's filmography.
Naked Lunch is one of the weirdest movies that I've ever seen, alongside Eraserhead and W.R. The Mysteries of the Organism. People are either going to be repelled by it, or fascinated by it.

I doubt that. I would have liked the move exactly the same without the head exploding scene. The actually effect isn't even the best thing about the scene for me, Ironside's performance during the scene is. He is a terrific villain and I think he is part of the reason it is liked so well. It also has some great style here and there and it still has the nightmarish feel to it half the time imo. I have been fascinated by most of his movies. Scanners is one the few that doesn't fascinate me.

I dunno. The head explosion has become iconic and the subject of many memes and animated GIFs. Other than Ironside as the villain, I barely remember anything else about Scanners.

That is just you though.Yes, I know that the head exploding is iconic, but that doesn't mean the movie wouldn't be remembered without it. I personally connect to the psychology of his films and that is part of the reason I like The Brood for example. His movies sometimes lack a fully realized narrative but they are still good movies to me. Most of his movies I like are right on the borderline of thumbs up/thumbs down for me. EXistenZ is one of the ones that is right on the border but on the thumbs down side. The Dead Zone also disappointed me. His only two movies I like A LOT are Eastern Promises and The Fly. They are a step ahead of the rest as far as I'm concerned. The Fly is brilliant body horror, anchored by a great central performance and expert directing.

Naked Lunch is one of his best movies imo. Michael Ironside gave a career-making performance in Scanners. Darryl Revok is one of horror cinema's finest villains - truly creepy, extremely dangerous and strangely charismatic. I disagree with you about the film though - it's one of Cronenberg's finest, mating his trademark 'body horror' style with cyberpunk aesthetic. And Stephen Lack was perfectly cast as the 'good scanner'. People often complain about Lack's performance but I thought it was excellent. Having lived his life as a social misfit on the outskirts of society, his character is supposed to be dull and devoid of personality. Veteran actor Patrick McGoohan and beautiful Jennifer O'Neill also delivered fine performances. I love the film. It's visionary sci-fi horror at its best.
