I believe a man is as big as what he's seeking. I believe you're a big man, Mr. Macreedy.

Fantastic movie.
Ernie Borgnine got his ass kicked a few times before 'Marty'

I found it a bit unlikely, those men just standing round obligingly while he beat one of them up. Why didn't they all jump him?

such an overrated film. the villains were portrayed as total duffers. ERNEST BORGNINE's character was too over the top. you also wondered why they didnt just kill SPENCER TRACY's character in the beginning itself. ROBERT RYAN, BORGNINE and LEE MARVIN are all redneck morons who are easily bested by the war veteran played by TRACY. it was all too hard to digest. it is quite suspenseful in the beginning when TRACY first arrives in the hicksville small town. but one dimensional villains and a holier than thou good guy ruins the interesting premise completely. the film did not even make good use of the smaller than small town setting. SPENCER TRACY's karate was well ..... like indian porn
(5/10)

One of several movies made shortly after WW2 that noted the contribution of minorities.

PARALYSED left arm, NOT AMPUTATED left arm! Just to let YOU know... " A one-armed stranger comes to a tiny town possessing a terrible past they want to keep secret, by violent means if necessary." www.imdb.com/title/tt0047849/?ref_=nv_sr_1 "According to one biographer of Spencer Tracy, the script did not originally call for the lead character to be a one-armed man. The producers were keen to get Tracy but didn't think he'd be interested, so they gave the character this disability with the idea that no actor can resist playing a character with a physical impairment. " "The Production Code Administration at first objected to the use of karate in the movie, calling it "not fighting heroically". When they were reminded of the fact that the hero's only got one arm they allowed it. "

PARALYSED left arm, NOT AMPUTATED left arm! Just to let YOU know... they gave the character this disability with the idea that no actor can resist playing a character with a physical impairment. Leave it to no-nonsense Tracy to do it in the simplest way possible: keeping his hand in his coat pocket. The character's look became so iconic that Tracy and director Stanley Kramer both satirized and paid homage to it in It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World: in black suit and rumpled fedora, he keeps his hand in his coat pocket for the first half-minute of his opening scene.

Bad Day At Black Rock holds up nicely. The reason they didn't kill Tracy's character was likely lack of clear motive, early on especially; plus maybe a respect for his age. The townsmen murdered the Japanese man in a fit of rage related to the world war and, likely, stories of Japanese atrocities, which were gruesome. Tracy was just an old white guy, and as noted early in the film, a likely "big man" in the real world beyond Black Rock. His extended absence would probably noted by the authorities. Not so easy a man to kill and get away with.

Maybe Spencer Tracy's best performance, at least by my reckoning. This one or Inherit the Wind.

Not bad, with some good work among the supporting cast. I know technically he wasn't, but Tracy by this stage seemed too old to be a WWII vet, and I don't find his performance to be among his best.

9/10 Count me as a definite YAY
Economical thriller with something important to say - top rank cast with as heavyweight a group of menacing heavies ever assembled - probably Robert Ryan's finest hour - a very large statement indeed - and, FATHER OF THE BRIDE aside, Tracy's too.
