In his prime or when he was fat? If the latter, then I suggest Ray Winstone.

With the proper make up, Kenneth Branagh would be a perfect fit.

Gary Oldman or Jean Reno.
Little less conventional, I always thought Jack Black had a surprising dramatic performance in him though...not on the same level as someone like Robin Williams, but similar. He's good at playing narcissistic characters...I'd buy a ticket...

Jonathan Rhys Meyers
actually no, that's a dumb idea. He's too good looking and thin.

Though I've been let down a lot, I'm a fan of rolling the dice and have consequently been surprised as well. Not necessarily saying Black would be the best, but I think a lot of otherwise talented performers get type-cast too quickly (and for comedians, too early). Adam Sandler tried like hell to break into drama (I liked 'Punch Drunk Love' and 'Spanglish'), but ended up returning to stuff more reminiscent of his earlier works. My wife laughed in my face when I told her I'd watch Black in the role. She went with Colin Firth...a safe (and excellent choice IMHO). In such a well known story, I don't mind getting a little weird with it. Then again, in a previous thread I mentioned the remake of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" being the only movie I've walked out on...due mostly to otherwise great actor, Johnny Depp's performance. Also wouldn't have imagined Jeff Goldblum being as good as he was in "The Fly" remake. Here's to the dice! All said and done, I'd still go with Reno at the end of the day
