I love how similar it really is to Jaws when you think about it.

I always liked it. Suspenseful atmosphere, creepy narration, gory kills, and a good cast.

A fun horror yarn with two enjoyable leads, creepy atmosphere and nice African locations.
We need more period movies about killer animals!

I liked it without loving it—but I don’t understand at all how panned it was by critics who are otherwise sympathetic to these types of movies. (I’m thinking of Ebert.) Kilmer was dreadful in this, but I loved Michael Douglas’s Robert Shaw-like ham-acting, the sets, the costumes, the gorgeous scenery, and, as politicidal mentioned, the gory kills. Fun cross between an African adventure and a horror flick.

In one of his books William Goldman writes that the 2 best real life stories he stumbled across were what became Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Ghost and The Darkness. He could never understand how one was a monumental hit and the other bombed so badly. Such is the movie business.

OldAussie Maybe too many people sympathized with the lions ? Death of an animal seems harder to take than human deaths ? The Old Yeller / Cujo syndrome ?
Even knowing their awful history, it's sad seeing them stuffed in a museum and knowing their names. Rather like Trigger and Bullet being on display at the Roy Rogers Museum.

Didn't like it at all. Ignoring the BS in the story about how many were killed by the lions, there is an ugly morality to the whole thing. Nothing about the railroad encroaching into wild areas which should have been an obvious point, and a rather sadistic scene with a monkey used as bait.
When Kilmer is talking to the black guy about why the Muslim and Hindu workers fight, and he says: the Hindus worship the cattle and the Muslims eat them--Kilmer asks: do you eat the cattle? and he replies "of course." Felt like a forced remark just to make the Hindus look foolish or weird.
And at the end, we see Kilmer and the Muslim foreman exchange waves. The Hindus remain anonymous as I recall. Why?
At the time I was thinking: that's really strange. Why the favoritism towards Muslims?
Now I understand (muslims are your friends-bring them into your community in large numbers), but back then the propaganda was a bit surprising.
It's an anti-Nature type of film and Jaws was the same, however it did it better.

Interesting and overlooked, based on an amzing true story, lions killing humans for fun. I haven't seen the earlier 3-D version. 1952 Loosely based on the same story Indian version 2005, the lions are replaced by tigers.

I've always loved this film. I ended up reading John Patterson's book (see above), and read some of his other works. He wrote two books about his service in WW1. He served as commander of the Jewish Legion in the Middle East and wrote a book about Gallipoli too. He was a very distinguished soldier and his books are interesting to read.
