anthonyrocksk … your earlier reply almost sounded like you had only heard about it from others.
What particularly appeals to you about it enough to buy two copies ?

What particularly appeals to you about it enough to buy two copies ? Just the whole story, the atmosphere, the acting, the music. I really enjoyed all of it.

I liked it without loving it—but I don’t understand at all how panned it was by critics who are otherwise sympathetic to these types of movies. (I’m thinking of Ebert.) Kilmer was dreadful in this, but I loved Michael Douglas’s Robert Shaw-like ham-acting, the sets, the costumes, the gorgeous scenery, and, as politicidal mentioned, the gory kills. Fun cross between an African adventure and a horror flick. I don't like the movie, but Roger Ebert seems to have an irrational hatred of it. In his review he says he thinks it is poorly made, poorly acted and poorly written, but he never gives a reason as to why he rates it as one of the worst movies he has ever seen. Based on the written review alone I would assume he rates it 1/4 stars. That is still a very low rating but he has rated hundreds of movies 1/4 stars, while The Ghost and the Darkness is one of the select few movies he has rated lower than that.

A policy followed by many … too many … posters on these boards !

A policy followed by many … too many … posters on these boards ! I also do it, but I will admit when my hatred is perhaps irrational. It still doesn't change the fact that I hate the movies with a passion though. Cloverfield and 300 come to mind. These are 2 of the worst movies I have ever seen, yet I can't really explain why I hate them on the level I do. The difference here is that I am not a critic. All people need to know is that I hate a movie, it isn't really their business why I hate it.

moviemouthBut "why" is usually the most interesting part. Even saying "I don't know why" adds something to a possible "discussion".

Nobody likes to admit they "don't know why" and I for one don't much enjoy discussing movies I hate. I usually avoid the whole situation. I just hand out my rating and that is that. I can say that I think Cloverfield is an ugly movie that fails at everything it is attempting to do, but there are other movies that fail in the same way that I don't despise on the same level. I think it is just a feeling in this case, rather than something logical. I will not pretend I don't feel this way for the sake of the fans or to save face though.

I love how similar it really is to Jaws when you think about it. It reminded me of Jaws as well.

I thought the movie was okay, not special, except for the most realistic lion attack I've seen, and I believe that took place in a dream sequence.

When it comes to the Movie's Rating, I actually think that it should have been Rated "PG-13" instead of "R".

Better than expected...which can be one positive after reading mediocre reviews...but I did needlessly delay watching it because of them. Worth a look, at least. 5/10
