I might end up liking it then, since I'm one of the few that generally liked Spiderman 3

Does Hardy mumble in this one?

no, it seems to be a very unusual alien-buddy bromance movie. Original stuff usually gets punished.
Not Marvel formula, you know not about a jerk becoming a nice super guy and winning the day.
So, I will see if this is a secret cult film, or at least so bad it is good again. I hear Hardy is brilliant to cringeworthy in this. Like Cage.
Interesting for now.

I'm not surprised at all. I was hoping for the best, but expecting the worst based on the trailers. I was skeptical of the idea from the get go actually. I just didn't see how the movie would work without Spider-Man, considering in the comic books Eddie Brock always gets the symbiote AFTER Peter Parker. This is why Venom has the Spider-Man eye shaping and the big white spider symbol on his chest. He does not have the white spider on his chest in this movie. Then they decided to go back on the R-Rating, which really made me lose hope.I finally went last night, because it was screening on a giant screen and is on its last legs in the cinema.
The US PG13 was not able to fully exploit the darker and more macabre aspects of Venom's potential. Why they chose to do this is a mystery, because had they gone for an R, it would have made the film instantly more appropriate to what hints at in the marketing and would have generated so much more interest. If Deadpool and Logan worked well with their R ratings—these were classified MA15+ in Australia which has the same guidelines as US R, except the age difference for parental accompaniment—then why not Venom which was M rated—mature recommendation only—in OZ.
I went in with zero expectation and I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would, but its fullest potential was lost. The darker aspects of Venom's nature was toned down to the max and while it was still dark, it was not blackly horrific\humorous and it could have worked ala something like Peter Jackson's Braindead aka Dead Alive. In fact, Jackson would have been a good choice for director of a full bloodied Venom.
I can't stand Dead Alive, but I get your point. Everything in your response I had already thought about btw. I don't expect to hate the movie, but I would be shocked if I enjoyed it. The clips I watched look pretty bad.

I've been crossing my fingers for it (big Tom Hardy fan), but crossing them harder after the critical reception. I'll still end up seeing the movie and hoping to like it. It's hard to imagine it not being at least slightly entertaining... THawk I too liked "Spider-man 3" and am hoping to have a similar experience with "Venom"...even if I'm in the minority.
