The choices are - Ordinary People Chariots of Fire Gandhi Terms of Endearment Amadeus Out of Africa Platoon The Last Emperor Rain Man Driving Miss Daisy
Pretty weak selection, especially when compared to the prior decade. Amadeus needs a rewatch but going with Platoon, which I've never thought as beyond okay.

Not a huge fan of most of these films, but Out of Africa was shot beautifully. The soundtrack by John Barry is superb as well.
I still hold a grudge against Chariots of Fire. It's a decent film, but Raiders or Reds should have won Best Picture.
Amadeus is decent, the soundtrack is better of course...
The rest of the films are very forgettable. Gandhi and Platoon were worth one watch a piece.

Rain Man (1988) - 7.5-8/10 (within my Top 104 movies) that's a clear cut choice for me and nothing else is even close.
p.s. I have only seen Gandhi(5/10)/Platoon(5/10)/Rain Man(7.5-8/10). but I doubt my opinion above would change even if I had seen all of them as playing the odds, chances are nothing else would score higher than a 6/10 for me. NOTE: my basic rating scale... 5/10 or less = Thumbs Down. 6/10 or higher = Thumbs Up.
Hell, Best Picture Oscar winners or nominee's are pretty weak in general as every now and then you will find some movies that stand out but not often as the odds are definitely against it.
strictly looking at ALL Best Picture Winners for me... only eight are worth mentioning. NOTE: worth mentioning = movies I personally score a 7/10 or higher.
if I count ALL nominated best picture... that total increases some. if I count every best picture nominee that I score a 6-6.5/10 or higher the total is only 29 movies. but if you go by movies I score a 7 or higher it drops back to 28 movies. so basically only 14.7% (28 out of 190) of my total favorite movies in general are made up of Best Picture Nominee's.

I haven't seen Chariots or Daisy (yet?). Of the rest, Anadeus runs away with it, followed by Platdogtagsn.

Pretty weak selection, especially when compared to the prior decade. The previous decade? I can only think of The Godfather as being the sole standout. You had shitty "feelgood" choices like Rocky and Kramer vs Kramer. Anyway, I've seen everything from this list except Ordinary People. I can't decide between Out of Africa, The Last Emperor, and Chariots of Fire. All three are stellar epics. I think I'll choose...Out of Africa.

Amadeus, with Platoon a distant second as well.

Terms of Endearment or Rain Man.
Out of Africa has one of the greatest scores I've ever heard, the movie is okay too.

The only standout title for me is Platoon, my favourite Vietnam War (and Charlie Sheen) movie.
