I say Bette Davis for one. She was her own person. She loved men and made no bones about it. She extremely successful in her career. She might have had a loud voice, but she was not a whiner. She was never a victim.
I remember when Bette was on the Dick Cavett show in the early 70s and she got out a cigarette, and Dick reached over and was about to offer her a light, then he pulled back and said "I hope that's okay" and Bette said, "Oh, yes. I'm not Women's Lib" and she leaned in and let him light her cigarette. And, god, what a sense of humor she had! Love love love love that woman!!!
Who do you say? Who's your gal?

As a general rule of thumb truly strong people don't feel a need to walk around talking about how strong they are.
Katherine Hepburn always struck me as quite strong willed with a more powerful voice than was typical for the era.

what is a “feminist” to you? When I used the word in this instance, I guess it would refer to a woman (or once in a while a man) who says they are a feminist, which would probably indicate a person who feels that there is something unequal or unjust going on and they feel compelled to be pro-active towards changing the status quo. Like Meryl Streep I would say is a feminist. And she is also a very strong and pretty likeable person, but she's no Bette Davis! Another good example of the kind of woman I am talking about is Judge Judy. She used to scare me when I was a kid because she was so damn direct, but she really has gotten my respect and admiration in the past few years. I saw an interview with JJ and Katie Couric, and JJ said that she never identified herself as a feminist. She was who she was. JJ is a very, very, very strong woman. Judge Judy is not a feminist...

As much as I don't really like KH, yes, she would be a very obvious example of a woman who was not oriented to feminism and was able to rest on the strength of her personality.

A female sheeple but in the pther direction.I think I get what you mean by female sheeple, but what do you mean when you say "in the other direction"? traditional female sheeple are suzie homemakers. the opposite type of sheeple is a feminist who automatically decries a very broad swath notions and behaviours. Someone who is neither does not succumb to a herd mentality, chooses his/her battles, and thinks critically about the ones she decides to fight.
