I just read that article and I think it's worth posting here especially since I was not aware someone can make it appear that a incoming call to your phone is from a legitimate business when it's not etc (like they can make a number you know is legitimate appear on your caller ID even though it's not actually that number calling you. but if you personally call a number you know is legit, then you don't have to worry as apparently they can't interfere with that stuff). because if one thinks they are talking to a legitimate business they will be more likely to give out info that, even the cautious types, would not normally give out.
but like the article basically sums up... do not give out any important info that could be used against you over the phone when SOMEONE CALLS YOU and only give out some info if YOU PERSONALLY CALL a number you know is legitimate otherwise there is a decent chance it's a scam and I would be especially cautious about incoming calls claiming they are well known business that they know many people use so it's easier to scam a higher volume of people etc.

When I worked part time as a telemarketer in college we had all kinds of tricks. Lol. I mean, it was a legit company, but people hate telemarketers so you have to play games.
Hell, I would hate having that kind of job ; you must have been a smooth talker or had the patience of a saint dealing with the people going off on you
but for those who don't know how to dodge telemarketers, this site should stop em here in the USA... donotcall.gov/

gameboyI think a telemarketer can get in trouble if they call people who went to that site (i.e. donotcall.gov) and asked not to be targeted by telemarketers by filling out there info. but if someone just tells a telemarketer company directly they don't want to be called I don't know if there is anything a business has to comply with. I am no legal expert, but I am pretty sure telemarketers can get in trouble if they call people who are on that list. p.s. I just checked that site and it shows my home phone number has been on the list for over 15 years now ; that stuff worked to because after that took effect (roughly a month or two after filling out the required info) you could see the general junk calls dropped quite a bit. anyone reading this who's in the USA and gets telemarketer calls, go to donotcall.gov and insert your info there as the telemarketer calls will pretty much stop (or close to it) about a month or two later when it takes effect.

It's quite simple...
When I'm not using my landline, I leave it disconnected.
The only people who can contact me are those who have my mobile number, which is otherwise unlisted.

People would ask to be put on it and we'd say yes but we never did. People can be very crass. If someone would tell me to "f off" I'd call them all day every five minutes and then hang up. Sometimes people get "crass" because they get pissed off with telemarketers.

Do you ever have fun with the scam callers? I had a student loan lady call me once. Her name was supposedly Brittney.
Brittney: "How much is your student loan?"
Me: "$450,000"
Brittney: [surprised] "Oh! Okay, Are you employed?"
Me: "Oh no, never. Not one employment on my record. Perfectly clean!" [pretending not to know what it meant]
Brittney: "Do you have a source of income?"
Me: [confidently] "I don't know!"
Brittney: "Do you have a job?"
Me: "Of course I have a job!"
Brittney: "What is your job?"
Me: "I mow the neighbors lawn, and... allowance, and...."
Brittney: [hangs up phone]

Brittney: [hangs up phone] I once had a telemarketer ring me up on Friday afternoon, just as I was leaving the house for the weekend.
I asked them if they could hang on and when they said they could, I put the phone receiver down on the kitchen bench, went out the front door, drove to my mother's place 200 kilometres away and spent a pleasant weekend there with my son.
When I got back on Sunday night, I found that they'd hung up... How rude!

I told one scammer who said there was a problem with my computer than something funny was oozing out of my computer after I did what they said.
They said: what?
I said: I don't know but it is shiny and kind of looks like...gold! Omigod I hit the jackpot! Thank you man!

Anyone ever got a call from someone who sounds as they came from India, saying that they have detected someting wrong in my microsoft and say they have a solution, or something similiar. It's happened to me few times.

That's the type I usually get. There's something wrong with my Windows, you need to check your computer blah blah.
I think I need to have the "California, Here I Come" tune ready to play when I discover I hit a gold mine.

Something else to be aware of …
ROBO calls that say "Press #2 to be taken off of our call list" only lets them know that they have randomly called a working phone number.
I get daily Robo calls from "Jennifer" letting me know that my "Business Google Account" needs updating. A. Don't Have a Business Google Account B. Never HAD a Business Google Account C. Don't WANT a Business Google Account
Vaguely remember pressing #2 sometime in the distant past.
No Call listing on official site has done nothing judging by the calls that come through.

Sometimes people get "crass" because they get pissed off with telemarketers. Just tell them you're not interested, no thank you, and hang up. That's what I do and I never have a problem. If you've ever done that job, you'd realize they're just working people trying to make a living. There's no excuse for miserable souls who get rude and nasty and try to take out their frustrations on them. That's what I tend to do too but sometimes people are suffering more than just "frustrations" so I'm hoping you never actually actually followed up the initial phone call with multiple phone calls just because the other person was "crass".

Last week I had a call from a young Indian gentleman who claimed to be calling from my bank. The call was regarding my credit card, but I heard a baby crying, kids squealing and a dog barking in the background.
Naturally, I knew right away it was a wild and crazy day at the bank! So I gave him all my personal information quickly so he could go see about the dog.

My opinion of people who get scammed is this:
If you're stupid enough to give out personal details to a complete stranger you deserve to get scammed.

Many years ago when I had a land line telemarketers would call my number everyday, sometimes at least 3 times a day, and it got so annoying it forced me to get call display. So everytime I saw "unknown number" or "private number" I just simply wouldn't answer. And of course the bastards would never leave a message.
