The St. Cuthbert Gospel is the earliest surviving intact European book. Some time around 698, it was slipped into the coffin of a saint.

I was at Lindisfarne and Durham quite recently on my holidays. I found it quite strange that such a fuss is made over St Cuthbert's grave in Durham cathedral, whereas the Venerable Bede's (in the same building) is barely advertised at all.
