My wife and I were having a discussion and I figured I would post it here and maybe I can get some insight.
If you like "real" fiction but hate "unreal/fantasy" fiction, why?
Why are you more interested in made up things that are just a step away from the real world as opposed to made up things that are on another land or planet?
Why do you want to read a story about a lonely farmer's daughter whisked away by a dashing warrior in Scotland, but have no interest in a story about a lonely farmer's daughter whisked away by a dashing warrior in Faerun?
Making all things equal, if both are comparatively well written, why would you say "Ewww...Wizards." or "Eww...Robots" and go "Oooh...teachers!" or "Oooh...housewives!"?

For me, it's that the character names are often made up instead of the human names we're familiar with.
