Personally, I see it as kind of like the Kobayashi Maru test......but with a few significant differences. What do YOU think? Is there any point to it? Is it all about gratification of the material self? Or is there more going on? Didn't Forest Gump answer this for us, a long way back?

Forrest Gump told us what Mama always said, but there might be other opinions as well.

@miccee Well, if the human was the only form on the planet, then yes, the value would be identical to that person's view. I supposed that proves the subjective value of life.

I have no difficulty accepting that a human life may have subjective value in the estimation of other humans. However, if there was only 1 sentient life form left on Earth, then that lifeform's value would be the same as its own estimation of its value (whether good, bad or indifferent). Life has subjective value; but it has no intrinsic value and a barren universe would be no worse off than one that was teeming with life. I'd go further and suggest that there isn't even any such thing as intrinsic value. "Value" is subjective by definition, and the only sense in which anything or anybody can ever be valuable is the sense in which they are valuable to somebody or something else. If the universe contained no thinking beings then nothing in it could be said to have any value at all.

Monica is referring to inherent meaning or purpose. You're talking about value or worth. Everyone has inherent value, if not for the parents, then for potential beneficial acts they may perform later. Every Christian I've known believes God has a plan for everyone and we were sent here to fulfill that plan. Atheists don't believe we were sent here by anyone for a specific purpose. So any purpose we may have in our lives is created by ourselves. It would only be depressing to me if I had chosen to never do anything beneficial for others and refused to love and be loved.
Well said, Sulla. Rachel. Welcome to the RFS. I wonder if you are an old member or new. I don't recall you on old IMDB except may be in the dying minutes of old RFS for one or two posts. Hope you like this board.

I 'lurked' the old IMDb board but rarely posted, because I had friends on another board that didn't know I was an atheist and I didn't want to offend them. We had a TV show in common, and they were both genuinely nice people, but were theists.
So, when the old board shut down, I changed my name and followed thefleetsin and Sulla over here. So I feel like I know everyone here but they don't know me really, yet. This is my only outlet for talking to other atheists because I live in an area surrounded by theists, and I'm trying to not blow my cover. I have just one true atheist friend IRL, and right now she is so wrapped up in the political charlie foxtrot that I don't want to overwhelm her.
This board is better moderated than the old one, and seems to have fewer flame wars. It's good to have a place where people can discuss religion, faith, spirituality and atheism in an anonymous format without having to worry that someone might vandalize your house because of your beliefs or lack thereof. Keep up the good work!

My personal view of human life is that we are already part of a greater consciousness. It's sort of a banal consciousness, sort of like a computer chess program working out moves. The game is just to survive disaster or self-eradication. Sorry. Very hum drum stuff. Good old survival of the species. I believe there is no such thing as free will. I think there is no such thing as the self. We are programed from birth, filled with the morals, mores, wisdom, religion, science, and the ideals of prevailing society. The concept of uniqueness is an illusion. No one has original thoughts. What you think and say has been said ad infinitum -- the echoing of ideas. We draw on the same thoughts and merely rinse, lather and repeat our ways through life -- no matter how much we try to escape it. Maybe that's the real horror of modern life, there is no escape from its mundane confines -- mapped and charted. To succeed is to contribute. Human life prospers from those advancements that come cumulatively and in brilliant glitches from pool of wisdom we share. But it's frightening to think that you're basically nothing but a little printed book of sayings, but there you have it. We're all just free running computer routines, bouncing off each other. We feed back our successful responses into the social machine and hope it advances us. We're the ads for our fathers; the little psalms of our culture. And your illusion of being a free soul is just a trick. Without having learned the definition of spirit, would you even know if you lacked one? I see us as grabbing a psychological shell for ourselves --- like shells hoisted by a hermit crabs --as we grown and learn. Adopting a persona. Who we are is ultimately.... nothing. We're nothing but an act. Impersonators of "persons."
So what's the lesson? Do what works, I guess.
