Seems fairly mixed at the moment. Rami Malek is getting universal praise as Freddie Mercury though.

My kid is pissed AIDS isn't discussed. We didnt know he was dying of it until after he died as I recall. It was a bit of a surprise so I could see the movie doing the same

For a start it's a PG-13 movie, so any more stronger or controversial aspects of Mercury's story will be whitewashed. It should have been no holds barred 'R'. Malek, also doesn't appear to have the charisma of Mercury and looks to small a build. Is he going to just be a dress up parody of Mercury? A Star Is Born went for an 'R' and that is doing good business. I am surprised it's PG13; I expected them to go that other route. But I guess they want the money that THE GREATEST SHOWMAN and LA LA LAND made. Though I don't think this cost that much?

I'll be very surprised if the movies doesn't include the fact that Mercury was gay. I'll be very surprised if it doesn't include his drug taking. But there's no particular need to throw either in the audience's face in a hardcore manner; as you say, allusion would be perfectly fine.

For me, the problem is going to be that it's light on comedy, horror, fantasy, SCiFi, thriller elements, etc.
I like "genre films." I don't normally watch straight or realistic dramas. But I have some interest in it simply because it's about Queen.

In the trailer, we do see where he and a guy are clearly initiating something, and we don't really see much with his wife besides her helping put his make up on him and smiling at him, so at least in the trailer they hinted more towards his relations with men than with women. Honestly, I knew almost nothing about him (I knew he was in QUEEN and he died fairly young. Until I looked it up, I didn't even realize how many of their songs I was familiar with, but I'm not that kind of music buff. I tend to know very little about the bands. I vaguely knew about Freddie M. from a story about him hanging out with Princess Diana, and even that was just cause my sister is a huge British Royals Family nerd), so watching the trailer- I assumed the blonde chic was a groupie of some sort and the tall guy who seems about to pounce Mercury was either his lover for most of the movie or just a guy he gets together with and it causes tension in the band, thusly making it important to have in the movie.

Even the trailer hints at his sexuality and that is difficult to hide. It is who Mercury was. Those that say he was bi, is just about softening the punch. The thing is, I bet Mercury would have sweared like a trooper and made coarse and crude sexual innuendos. The films PG-13 rating would not allow for a brazen Mercury or Queen. The film will be whitewashed. Lol, you're actually accusing it of whitewashing him because you assume it's not depicting him the way that you assume he was in real life. Ridiculous.

Trust me! The film is whitewashed and the US PG-13 rating is proof of that.
I don't trust you given the weird variation of logic that your argument rests on.

I have a feeling this movie will be a surface look at Freddie Mercury. It won't discuss his homosexuality, AIDS diagnosis, etc. Or I should say this stuff won't be looked at in fine detail.

Saw the trailer before Bad Times at the El Royale.
All's I kept thinking was how robbed we are without Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie.

Sounds like it may just be like what Sacha Baron Cohen didn't want it to be like.

I just saw it and I really liked it. I think the preconceptions about it here are misplaced. We don't get full on sex scenes, but his homosexuality is a major part of the movie (I mean, have you Singer's X-Men movies? Of course he wouldn't ignore that), and AIDs does come in.
I don't normally like music biopics. It could just be that I love Queen, but I think what this one had that others often don't is a fun energy and sense of humor. Also, Malik is great in it. My only real complaint was the pacing, as it can feel like a greatest hits checklist at times.
