I just saw it and I really liked it. I think the preconceptions about it here are misplaced. We don't get full on sex scenes, but his homosexuality is a major part of the movie (I mean, have you Singer's X-Men movies? Of course he wouldn't ignore that), and AIDs does come in. I don't normally like music biopics. It could just be that I love Queen, but I think what this one had that others often don't is a fun energy and sense of humor. Also, Malik is great in it. My only real complaint was the pacing, as it can feel like a greatest hits checklist at times. Ah, so it's like the rock version of The Greatest Showman? I'd probably like it too then.

The same thing happened with The Greatest Showman and I thought critics were wayy too harsh on that.

I don't think this movie needs to be a PSA on HIV/AIDS. Mercury had a hell of a legacy, AIDS victim was not the biggest mark he left on the world. I'm sure it won't shy away from him being gay either, but again, it's not a film about him being gay. It's about Queen and the legacy of their music. As long as that's the focus, I'll be happy with it.

I'll probably watch it at some point, but I've never really been a fan of Singer's directing (has nothing to do with whatever he's been accused of, because I dont care) his movies have personally felt dull...so.....

Agree with this critic:
What we ultimately wanted from Bohemian Rhapsody was not carbon-copied concerts, but behind-closed-doors insight into a deeply private, complicated, internationally beloved superstar.

Considering he kept it a secret until his death, it's probably accurate. It doesn't shy away from the fact that he got AIDs anymore than Straight Outta Compton, it's just not Philadelphia. But him being gay is definitely a huge part of the movie.

I thought we got a little of both. Carbon copied or not, the Live Aid ending is pretty epic and moving.

My only real complaint was the pacing, as it can feel like a greatest hits checklist at times. Is it like a PG-13 version of The Doors movie from 1991? That movie was fun and Kilmer's brilliant in it, but I feel it was too focused on Morrison with the other members in the background. It was a good movie when it could've been great.
I also have mixed feelings on biopics where the old members are heavily involved in the production. Take Straight Outta Compton for example. The story of N.W.A's rise and fall is an intriguing one, but the presence of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Eazy-E's widow as Executive Producers ensured that they wouldn't delve into any of the negative aspects of the members or their music (see: Dre and Eazy's violent abuse of women and the group's misogynistic lyrics). It's a shame because for me, characters in biopics are more compelling when they're shown in a flawed human light as opposed to showing them as flawless heroes.

Loved it. Absolutelly loved it.
I understand why people say its sanitized and why they could have a problem with it.
To me its not a problem. The focus was just elsewhere. It didnt leave his homosexuality or aids dianosis or wild parties and substance abuse out. it just was not the main focal point of the movie and for me thats ok, since the actual movie of the movie was so good with Malek giving an absolutely amazing performance.
Would have loved to have seen what Singer would do with it had he stayed though...
long stort short: its a clear crowd pleaser and while some think thats bad it begs the question if Mercury himself wouldnt have seen how he was all about pleasing the crowds too...

For myself, I will reserve any expectations, or non-expectations, until I see it and that will be a few weeks away. I just feel that from the reviews I have read, that it is the hype of the music and Queen's following that is appealing to audiences, but the detractors are saying that it is sanitized family Freddie as I suspected. Malek has also been accused of lacking the dynamic, vibrancy and cheekiness that Freddie portrayed in his off stage persona and is more like a bot. i can see the complaints about the movie being a sanitized version of his life, it is, but his performance is really great. i think we are looking at an Oscar nomination coming his way. And well deserved.

I saw it yesterday and i absolutely love it. But as a lifelong fan of Queen, there sure is a lot of mistake that i dont understand how they could do them.

I enjoyed it very much. I've watched the Live Aid concert with them dozens of times and found it amazing how they recreated that so well.
