He was on one of those "find your ancestors" shows on TV and found it ironic that he had ancestors who were dentists.
A good orthodontist might have changed the whole course of his career and that would have been a shame !

Although some of these did have starring roles most of the time they didn't so I consider them "character actors"

Whenever I think of the term character actor, George Buck Flower always comes to mind.
Others; Tracy Walter Paul Koslo Charles Cyphers Stephen Tobolowsky

I love Judy Greer. I wish she was given more leading parts than supporting.

A couple have mentioned Claude Rains, but I think he was major enough to have somewhat gone beyond the 'character' tag. I have a lot of 'em, and lament the fact that they seem to be a bit of a dying breed; one of my all time favorites has to be Anthony Zerbe, who's played the gamut of baddest bad guys to good guys and is always fun to watch in any role. Plus, I got to see him in a live stage performance some years back, and he's the only character actor I can say that of

William Fichtner and Sam Rockwell I just watched Moon (2009) the other night and I thought it was the best performance I've seen from Sam Rockwell.

Royal Dano may be my favorite.
Others: Paul Fix R G Armstrong Martin Basalm Edgar Buchanan Michael Pate
Some say Raines and Ben Johnson, but they've been in leads for sure. Of course, one could say Claude Raines on a technicality that he wasn't "seen" in his biggest lead role, until the end.
Others who have been leads, but usually aren't, that I enjoy, are George Kennedy, Arthur Kennedy, Dan Duryea, Peter Cushing, Forest Tucker, and Stephen McNally

While Warren Oates and Peter Lorre in particular have been leads, I'd hardly classify any of their leading roles as "big budget films". Warren Oates Thomas Mitchell Ward Bond Peter Lorre
