And you can only pick someone who has stayed a character actor, they haven't ever been the leading man in a big budget movie like a John C Reilly.

William H. Macy? I know technically he's played the lead in some movies, but I still consider him to be more of a character actor.

John C. Reily and Michael Ironside for sure...but though they've already been mentioned...
I agree with William H. Macy being a great character actor, though he could carry a lead just as well. Like a Willem Dafoe, Christopher Walken, Bob Odenkirk, or John Goodman...each is someone I can't wait to see what they're going to do next.
I'd also throw in Steve Buscemi and Uli Lommel.
It's a tough thing to peg down, being a character actor. Someone like Steve Carrell was fantastic as a lead in "The 40-Year Old Virgin" but equally great in a supporting (character-y, one-note) role in "Anchorman." Somehow he did both just as great as the other.

Lon Chaney. not the "wolfman" guy.
Big fan ever since PBS started showing silent films on Sunday nights back in the 70s. They showed The Hunchback of Notre Dame, He Who Gets Slapped and a somewhat obscure one called The Monster (1925). The Phantom of the Opera was shown at one point but I didn't get a chance to watch it. Other great Chaney films -- The Unholy Three (1925), The Unknown (1927 with Joan Crawford), Oliver Twist (1921 LC as Fagin), London After Midnight (1928). The latter is thought to be lost. No complete print has been in circulation since at least the 1960s. But stills from all parts of the film were used some years ago to make a video presentation shown on TCM. Other ones - The Penalty, West of Zanzibar (with Lionel Barrymore), The Unholy Three (1930), which is not as good as the silent version but you get to hear Chaney's voice in his only talkie.

I would have said that my fav male character actor is Walter Huston but I am not sure he would qualify as he did leading roles as well.
So my answer would be Peter Lorre
If I were asked who is my fav female character actor then my answer would definitely be Elsa Lanchester. I don't need to think twice with this choice.

The vast majority of my "favorite" actors are of the Character Actor variety, even the ones to have played leading roles and attained major stardom. Way too many to list or mention.
