I’m about 2/3 of the way through and am struggling mightily to finish it. I can see why in the 50’s it was shocking and interesting but now it’s dated and just corny in many places. It also feels redundant and repetitive as much of the books is just descriptions of them getting drunk or driving and it’s the same thing over and over. In 1957 I’m sure it was outrageous but now the books is almost quaint.
Anyone else read this? What did you think of it?

I had always planned to read it but now I'm not sure I'll bother.
Speaking of overrated (though perhaps it's not a classic) what about 100 Years Of Solitude. I couldn't even get through one third of it.

It's just one of those books you always hear about and I do not get the appeal or why it's held in such high regard. |

I always like to point out that there is no such thing as "overrated." People are not wrong to like books that you don't like. They haven't made a mistake and "overrated" a bad book. They liked it. They haven't got it wrong. Maybe YOU have it wrong.

The book likely reads poorly to you because it created a genre of writing that's by now been done over and over again. If you can put aside accrued preconceptions, and read it 'in context', so to speak, it becomes easier to understand the literary sensation it caused in its day.
The term 'dated' is pointless anyway. All things 'date' from the time of their creation--some age well, some less so, but all do. The mere fact of their dating doesn't de facto determine their worth; they have to at least in part be appreciated from the perspective of what they meant at the time of their creation.

No, "dated" isn't pointless. I mean, you just pointed out context matters. I'm not reading the book in 1957. I'm reading it in 2018. I just reread Trainspotting, it's not dated at all. I recently read A Confederacy of Dunces and while I didn't think it was anything special it didn't come off as dated. I love Conan and have a book of the original Conan stories, they're not dated at all. I love Raymond Chandler, I have all his books, they don't strike me as dated. Some things don't age well, some do. On the Road comes off as very dated to me. |

I read this in just a few hours in the Port Authority bus terminal in NYC while I was waiting for a connection. It seemed like the right atmosphere for reading it. I did not care for the style and form and about halfway through it I was bored with the subject matter.
I love what Truman Capote said about the book. "That's not writing, that's typing."

I did not care for the style and form and about halfway through it I was bored with the subject matter. I love what Truman Capote said about the book. "That's not writing, that's typing." You couldn't have read the book in a few hours unless you speed read. It's not a huge book but it's not something you can read in a few hours either. I agree with Capote's comment though. |
