bride of frankenstein was the first film that came to mind. The first Tarzan sequel, the sexually charged, tarzan and his mate (1932) is highly regarded, but 'great' would be pushing it.

Or World War II. Memorable villain, bigger budget.

Apparently "The Fall of a Nation" a now lost film was a direct sequel to "The Birth of a Nation." That was 1916... It made substantial money at the time.

Most definitely Bride of Frankenstein if you're taking specifically about film sequels.

Bride of Frankenstein was 1935, Tarzan and His Mate was 1934. Both of them are great but the first great sequel was Son of Kong 1933.

Son of Kong is much better once you accept it as a character-driven story and not an adventure sequel. It's got some Moby Dick elements with Carl Denham seeking to redeem himself and the white ape playing a symbolic role in the process. And given how quickly it was made-months after the original premiered...

My choices are as follows in terms of oldest sequel of a movie for me that I score in the following brackets...
7/10 = The Godfather Part II (1974) (sequel to The Godfather (1972))
7-7.5/10 = From Russia with Love (1963) (sequel to Dr. No (1962))
7.5-8/10 = Goldfinger (1964) (sequel to From Russia with Love (1963))
8/10 = The Color of Money (1986) (sequel to The Hustler (1961))
9/10 = Casino Royale (2006) (sequel to Die Another Day (2002))
10/10 = For a Few Dollars More (1965) ; NOTE: some seem to consider it among The Man with No Name Trilogy (i.e. A Fistful of Dollars(1964)/For a Few Dollars More(1965)/The Good, the Bad and the Ugly(1966)) so I 'guess' this would count even though I don't really see this as a sequel so I personally would not count it but it's THE only one I could consider as a sequel that I scored a 10/10.
so basically... if you remove the details in each bracket and just looks at score brackets in a basic sense of 7/10 to 8/10 to 9/10 to 10/10, my choices are... From Russia with Love (1963)/Goldfinger (1964)/Casino Royale (2006)/For a Few Dollars More (1965). funny, nearly all James Bond movies
so basically... those are the oldest movies in each score bracket that are sequels that I consider worth mentioning (i.e. movies I personally score a 7/10 or higher). NOTE: I realize the term 'great' can vary from person to person so I just covered all of the possibilities above by sticking only to movies that are good enough to be among My Favorite Movies
I'll see your Godfather II and raise you Goldfinger.
I can slightly top that one if I base it on movies I score a 7/10 or higher.... From Russia with Love (1963)
NOTE: for the record... I like Goldfinger (7.5-8/10) more than From Russia with Love (7-7.5/10)

It's either The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976) or Jaws 2 (1978).

Fritz Lang had made "Die Spinnen, 1st part" (1919) and "Die Spinnen, 2nd part" (1920) before,
but the first GREAT movie with a GREAT sequel had been his
Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler (1922) Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse (1933) (the 2nd sequel "Die 1000 Augen des Dr. Mabuse" had been not so great)
