Pros - Exceeds in just about every facet. I think this and Boogie Nights stand as his masterpieces.
Cons - If looking for a film with a likeable protagonist, it's probably not your bag, baby!
A shot like this immediately remind me of Kubrick.

Pro: The film has effective visuals drawing you into the story. It's filmed in a way that makes you interested about what's going to happen next.
Con: Admittedly though the story is depressing.

Aside from the fact that it's a slow burn with no space battles, it's one of few movies I genuinely consider a masterpiece. Daniel Day Lewis is something else, truly something else other than the real Daniel Day Lewis. These are the results of the fruits of his labor. Genuinely impressed with Paul Dano too.
I loved it. I think for a while I was a little too strung up on the Marvel movies and There Will be Blood was absolutely the necessary palette cleanser of seriousness that I needed.
That is to say I only watched it recently for the first time. No idea what took me so long.

Cons:
-the fact that the ending isn't a drunken fantasy, according to PTA
-no other cons per se, I just don't have the same attachment to it as others, I guess on account of its coldness. Actually, I find the people who love it most tend to be able to cheer and root for Plainview, which I did not
Pros:
-acting, directing, score, cinematography, set design, etc

Pro: Successful in an experiment. What experiment? You came close to identifying it when you said "no protagonist". There was a protagonist, or actually a protagonist family.
The holdout family was the old time film heroes, the Swiss family Robinson, the McCahan, the Earps. We never see them. The experiment was purring them in the backdrop, and having a point of view from the lunatic villain and his prey.
Cons: Somehow, some people either missed the point, or the point was amiss. The young preacher was never given a chance. Plainview marked him for destruction, with absolutely no provocation, from the start, and pushed the poor boy over the edge. The young man hadn't the experience to let Plainview and his evil go, and Plainview was simply a devil worshiping monster who knew it. Through all his gloating, all he did was abuse power, authority, and gifts to torment those with no resources. There's no strategy or inspiration in that. It's just abuse of power. Somehow, some people missed that, because some people think highly of that monstrous character. There are people like that in real life, and they merit no respect.
